No It doesn't have to go further than that, but this is a forum and if everyone took your stance it would be a pretty boring place don't you think? If I seem pasionate on this subject it's because many people I know hide behind 'opinion' as a way of dodging discusion. For example when I try and talk about politics with a friend they would go 'it's my opinion, so lets stop arguing'. Well if everyone in the world did this then nothing would ever get done.

Personaly I enjoy debating, I enjoy finding out why people think differently to me, and I enjoy haveing my opinions challanged.

I will be the first to admit that a few months back on these boards I made some very negative comments about faith no more along the lines of them making childish music and being one hit wonders and Red Hot Chili Pepper rip offs. These comments were rightly challanged and so I listened to an album of theirs, Youtubed them, Wikid them and now my opinion of them has completely changed, and I realize I was making a judgment on a band I didn't really know that well. That is why its good to debate.

i don't take this stance on everything i discuss, so you don't need to teach me anything about forum etiquette - i've been doing this for years. take notice - i didn't say anything like you said. i haven't wrote either band off as one hit wonders or rip offs. i just think they're shit. if you want to debate this then you can, sure, but nothing will come of it. i know this, i hope you know this, and as a result this would mean debating this fact would be utterly pointless. i am 100% sure that debating this fact will do nothing to change my opinion or personal preference towards slipknot or def leppard.

i'm not hiding anything behind my opinion, it's quite clear: i do not like these bands because i do not like their music. this is the third time i've said this now. please accept that.

If it's pointless to debate then why say anything in the first place? why not just use the poll and not post anything? The definition of a forum is a 'public meeting place for discussion'. As I have shown there is something to be gained from debating, unless your too stubborn or arrogant to listen to people with different opinions.

To those who say Slipknot dont write deep, meaningful songs try listening to Vermilion Part 2. More emotion in that than any song i've heard by Faith No More. I chose Faith No more in the poll btw and i'm a huge fan i just dont see how people can say slipknot aren't a diverse band who can write beautiful songs as well as shit hot metal.

I'd be interested to know how much of Slipknot any of you who are calling them shit have listened to.

I'll start with something mainstreamish...

Not really shit is it, atall.

If you've ever been in a band, you should realise its quite hard to write/compose/make music, especially good complex music.

Imagine that with 9 members to have parts for. Ok. now shut up about them not being able to play instruments or not being musicians or w.e someone said.

BTW I'm not even really a fan.

personally i hate slipknot as much as i hate faith no more as much as i hate def leppard. none of them are my cup of tea.

i have only seen slipknot out of the 3 and to be fair they put on a good show, it just doesn't happen to be my klind of thing.

Slipknot are a good band they proved they could oulast the rest of their nu-metal contemporaries! They write decent enough songs and are all very talented.

But they still rely on on a gimmack! One day (and they will do) they will take off those silly costumes and let their music do their talking. They still need a bit of maturing yet.

Oh and having that plane last year advertising their uk tour when they pulled out (a decent enough excuse) last year when 100s of ppl had probably forked out money to see them was out of order. Not their fault and was probably management but was still out of order.

To people who think Slipknot wearing masks is a gimmick, can you not see past what they wear? They wear them because it helps them get a bit more in character for gigs, that's all. In the same way that most bands have 'stage clothes' as well as regular clothes, they just go a little further. Personally I think they write very good metal songs, with a bit more reliance on big heavy riffs than self-indulgent guitar solos every other verse. What's more, from what footage I've seen of them, they look like a very entertaining live band too. But people still just get wound up that they were a nu-metal band and wear outfits. *Yawn*.

Anyway, I AM going to see FNM, I just think people are often stupidly closed-minded.
