Not sure but the JP was rammed at each of the bands I wanted to see there last year, even early in the afternoon. Was feeling decidedly crushed in the tent to see Glasvegas and couldn't get anywhere near for the Ting Tings, and the screen outside was rubbish and could do with some decent speakers outside.

It put me off from going to see anyone popular there.

Didn't the Doves play the pyramid in 2005? I seem to remember watching them for a bit before going off and discovering Alabama 3 whilst waiting for Roots Manuva!

Interesting, I've been thinking about this, i reckon Neil Young will pull a bigger crowd than Bruce Springsteen. I'll not be at either of them, I'm no fanboy with a vested interest, but my gut feeling is that of the people who go to Glastonbury, more will be interested in Young than in Springsteen. I don't really know why, it's just something I can see happening.

I'm not really arguing abut this, cos frankly, I;m not fussed about either of them, but from my acquaintances, there'd be more interest in seeing Young than Springsteen. I can see Young drawing the old hippies, and the young cogniscenti more than Springsteen. For all the people I grew up with, springsteen is seen as a bit of a joke. I'm not interested in whether that's right or wrong, but I suspect for a lot of people, particularly those at Glastonbury, Young has far more credibility than Springsteen and is someone they're more interested in seeing.

If you look at say this site, there's what 35 pages on the Doves, where the truth is, that in a wider perspective, they're not that well known. I do think the make up of the crowd at Glastonbury is quite specific and sales doesn't equal interest/audience at Glastonbury.

As i said, I'm not slating anybody, and neither of them really do it for me, but I don't think it's as clear cut as some people on this forum would have you believe.

Yes I am. Everyone who has asked me about the headliners either don't know who Neil Young is or have heard very little of his music. I know this doesn't represent everyone who is going to Glastonbury but just made me feel he won't get as big a crowd as someone like Bruce Springsteen would.

I really don't mean this to be rude, but how old are you (and the people you talk to)?

Since he was first announced for IOW, I've been really surprised by the lack of awareness (and it's not just you, a lot of people have said similar) of Neil Young.. I'm 29 and while I certainly wouldn't say I grew up with his music, he was always someone that I was aware of.

I'd always considered Neil Young to be one of the "legends", somewhere on a par with the likes of Dylan or perhaps Lou Reed - but I'm getting the impression that over the years his status / myth doesn't seem to have carried on to younger generations in quite the same way as the others have..

Before Neil Young got announced I had only heard of him. Like knew the name that's all. When I saw he was a headliner I was like wtf?! lol Having researched him I totally understand why he is a headliner but like incident says, his 'legend' hasn't really carried. Most people who ask who the headliners are at Glastonbury have these responses when I tell them(I'm 21 btw and most people I talk to are 18-25).....

Blur

"That will be amazing!"

"Wow"

Neil Young

"Who is that?"

"What does he play."

"Is he still alive?"

Bruce Springsteen

"BORN IN THE USA!!!!!!"

"What else does he play?"

I actually think Springsteen is judged by a lot of people that speak to me about it in a kind of comedic way. Like a 'student' artist. By that I mean a lot of people only know that 1 song and it's the type of song that gets played in student unions cheesy nights along side 'Crazy Horses' etc and that's what he gets judged on.

Not saying it's correct but it's the impression I get. These ere forums don't represent the UK populace very well I don't think, god even my dads mate were taking the piss out of Springsteen. These are guys that watched Pink Floyd, were at Glasto in the late 80's, record collections of hundreds and all that sort of stuff. Far from 'naive' or 'closed book' youngsters.

I was quite surprised with that, to be honest. Most people I have spoken to view Springsteen as quite a legend and that's also the 18-25 category.

it's actually the opposit for me, alot of the people I have spoken to including older people that I know,, see Neil Young as quite dull, boring and a bit of a joke. I guess it depends really but there are always people who aren't going to like someone.

yeah, kind of, I ore sort of meant that rightly or wrongly, Neil Young has a kind of credibility (horrible word, sorry, but can't think of an appropriate synonym) amongst 25-45 year olds that Springsteen doesn't have. Springsteen sort of admitted that there's a lost generation of people out there who don't gt him, and I suspect a fair few of that genration are going to be at Glastonbury. I really don't want this to be about young/old whatever, but I do think amongst the people I know, Springsteen was seen as far too bombastic for us in the 80s and 90s and there aren't many people who grew up with Smiths> Happy Mondays>Blur posters on their walls who also had springsteen stuff. Neil Young seems different, i think, in terms of some people's perception.

Like I say, it's just a hunch, and I've no axe to grind

*cue loads of 1980s smiths fans who also love springsteen posting* ;):):(

mind, I'm clearly a shocking judge of this, i'm frequently amazed at the size of crowds acts on the pyramid get. Bands that were an anathema to my contemporaries growing up get thousands and thousands of people watching.

The biggest thing I get from this forum is an understanding of how wide the range of festival goers taste is, and how shit I'd be at booking the festival.

I think it will be very similar to what happened with Winehouses set (which was shocking), I mean the pyramid stage was packed for her but not because they were huge fans or becuase she was really famous, but I think it was just out of interest, and people were probably there ebcause they wanted to know wether or not she turned up or would it be car crash television or not.
