Been a few years since I last went to Glastonbury so I guess that there is loads more to do from midnight. Will try the silent disco and am bound to find some Drum n Bass without looking to hard.

Am wondering if anybody found a late night tent/bar area that played 90's dance and indie stuff last year that I could head for this year? Being mid 30's its the music that I still enjoy the most now. Sure I could find somewhere but a heads up before the festival starts would be appreciated

Hopefully there will be some more late night places outside of trash city and shangri la this year. Both of them were very packed at night, and I often gave up trying to get in though the massive crush at the entrances - not sure if it thinned out once you got inside, but it didn't look much like fun.

2007 was a joke as the whole festival seemed to shut down at 12! Last year was a lot better, but I think they need to spread it out a bit more. I'd really like to see small dance tents in the green fields like there used to be in the 90's - had some wicked times wondering round those seeing what was on (anyone remember the awesome Rainbow Dragon Stage?). Back then the greenfields came alive at night, now its dark and quiet, and people are mostly walking though there to get to somewhere else, I really miss the way it used to be :)

Guess it shut down at 12 in 2007 as everyone was just too wet and fed up with battling the elements to carry on by then.

Totally remember this description of the greenfields at night in the 90's - always used to be some random party going on in one of the serveral larger marquees up there, and often all sorts of surreal little performances and art installations to walk around or even inside. Was always a band on the other bandstand up there until late - midnight performances from the likes of Kangaroo Moon, The Lost T-Shirts of Atlantis or perhaps a skiffle or brass band. Seemingly less obvious now perhaps are those enchanting candlelit pathes leading to hidden nightspots decorated with fairylights with some background dub playing to a largely mellow (stoned) audience. Used to be like a hippy inspired interpretation of Narnia in some parts. Wonder what ever happened to the top hatted guy on a bike pulling a cart load of buresque ladies service vodka jellies and shots that used to serve us all whilst up around there? And those mulled cider stalls . . .

Yes you are so right about the green fields. It is a massive loss to the festival the way this area has changed. I wonder whether this is due to licensing requirements or whether the people who used to be in the greenfields have fallen out of love with glastonbury as it have become more and more commercialised/expensive. The greenfields are very different from how they used to be in the daytime too, not just at night. A sad loss that will never be replaced.

I often wondered about that - I didn't go to Glasto 2000 -2002 but that was when the greenfields seemed to change as it was still there in 99, and not when I went back in 2003. Maybe its due to Meanfiddler being involved since then? I guess it could also be due to licensing, but those small tents can't make much noise, and some of them even had bike powered sound systems, with people being pulled out of the crowd to take a turn!

that description above of the "secret" late night tents with winding paths decorated with fairy lights etc where everyone was so chilled you could stay there all night have really taken me back to a happy place!

I have a feeling the mulled cider sellers have probably been forced out by the "exclusive" contracts the festival have with the major beer/cider sellers but you are right, surely those smaller tents are not in any breach. Who knows. To be honest I dont have a clue how the greenfields work - do they all have to pay to be there? or is it just a normal ticket they have to buy? or are they let in for free? I cant imagine some of those guys on the internet clicking refresh to try and get tickets so maybe that is when it all changed? When the festival started selling out in hours (2003/2004?). I cant remember when it changed now I think of it. 2000 sounds about right I guess.

Do you remember the small tent where you got a free spliff with every tea, if you made a donation to some bizarre self suffiencet building project fund or something? God that was years ago. I think the people in there were dressed up in medieval clothes or something.

Perhaps it was all a dream!

Don't remember that one (though perhaps I wen't there and just don't remember it :)

Remember a small tent, lit almost entirely using those UV lights where everyone was sitting around glowing and intently focussed on a small cinema screen in the corner showing Felix the Cat, or some such bizzare stuff. No-one was really moving, or talking, and I wondered whether I had stumbled upon a strange cult of Felix or something.

Other curious night time sights I miss from up there:

Original Tipi Field,

Crafts / Sculpture Field (seems to have shrunk into just a smaller street up there now),

Mad illuminated inflatables,

Stone Circle drummers and fire jugglers - yes, there are still there but nothing like the number there were,

Public campfires in other areas of site - yep, there are still big ones at Strummerville and in middle of Stone Circle - there used to be many more,

Inpromptu stages - occasionally crop up again, but now seemingly rehersed rather than spontaneous.
