Lithium05
I'm a bit annoyed that RA are clashing with Arctic Monkeys, but that's only because I'm not a fan of either. Neither band are good enough to headline the stages they are... and f*ck off "lyrical genious" you lot sound like 12 year old girls talking about Take That! Arctic Monkeys are drab, middle of the road, pop rock nonsense, and no more deserving of the headlining spot than Razorlight and Franz Ferdinand, f*ck they only deserve it more than the darkness because they actually have enough songs to fill their (still too long) set! Edit: Thought I was finished ranting but apparently not... You know how when you don't like some thing, but you can see why people do? For example: I dont like Muse, I can see they're talented musicians, but Matt Bellamy's voice annoys me too much for me to like them as a band. The Arctic Monkeys however I just dont get: I've listened to both their albums and find them incredibly bland. Lyrically they're no better than the aforementioned Razorlight, and musicly they're cut from the same mould too, and I'm so sick of being told different. SJH
I'll be at Arctic Monkeys, I've wanted to see them since their first album and almost did until illness prevented me from going to see them in Cardiff thus leading me to sell my ticket. inspectedinspector
This is all a futile argument as most people who see Rise Against will despise the British indie music and visa versa. Seems an odd comparison :/. Edited April 28, 2009 by inspectedinspector

Lithium05
If you honestly can't tell the difference between arctic Monkeys lyrics and Razorlight's lyrics, and aren't just trying to wind up AM fans, then you either haven't actualy read them or you're seriously slow on the academic front. I mean how can you compare 'woah woah woah, there's trouble in america' to anything by the Arctic Monkeys? I know to a certain extent lyrics are subjective but a primary school student could notice the difference in style.

Fozzy_Bear
Damn  Hate this clash. Will probably go wherever my mates end up as I like both bands, although I'd proably see Rise Against if I had the ultimate choice.

hearing_aid
Surely just disussing lyrics when discussing a bands quality is quite futile as its only a part of what makes a band good, in fact sometimes lyrics are one of the least important things to a band. Sure don't get me wrong, Lyrics 'can' help elevate a band to true greatness but good lyrics with bad music can mean nothing. If Arctic Monkeys sounded like Limp Bizcuit but witht the same lyrics they would be an awful band. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine has lyrics you can't understand half time yet it is considered one of the best albums and most important albums made. Likewise Cocteau Twins don;t even use real words but were still a great band.

jammy2211
The only reason people are comparing lyrics is cause they're the only two things you can compare - musically both bands are very very different and prefering one to the other is just completely subjective. Lyrics are too I guess, but to a lesser extent. I personally don't get all the love for AM's lyrics, I can appreciate their 'good' though they just do nothing for me. I guess it's just the motives - singing about a man who is 'scummy' or some girl on the dance floor - does absolutely nothing for me. I always wonder how important lyrics are from a live performance too in all honesty... hm. I don't see how good or bad lyrics can make a difference there...maybe. hearing_aid
It depends on what you like really. To me Lyrics are nearly as important as the music if not quite as important because music without lyrics is still music but lyrics without music is not music. Then again Bob Dylan isn't considered a legend for his music is he. I consider production, artwork and fashion to be very important in music but again some people couldn't care less about what goes on the cover, so it's all subjective. I wouldn't say disscusing it is futile.

jammy2211
If I hear a new song live I rarely understand the lyrics, esspecialy at festivals but if the whole crowd is singing along and I'm familiar with the material then Lyrics are just as vital. shoptildrop
Whether the crowd are singing along doesn't really depend on how good the lyrics are though, is more my point. Whether the lyrics are absymal or genius the whole singing along thing doesn't really depend on their meaning. More just how catchy the song is and how popular the band is :/.
