The Park Headliners

So, for a long time we all believed that the Park's Headliners were more or less destined to be:

Friday: Fleet Foxes

Saturday: Animal Collective

Sunday: Bon Iver

HOWEVER..... the lovely delightful Mr E. festivals now has Fleet Foxes as being down for the Pyramid stage on that Friday. Of course, its very much possible that they'll play two stages in the same day, but is it probable.....? In other words, does this mean that the Friday Night Park headlining slot is up in the air? If so, interesting, very interesting. Headlining the Park is always a fantastic slot, in my opinion, even if it sometimes goes to some less than stellar acts. So, if not Fleet Foxes, then who do we think?

My dream-come-true solution would be Cherry Ghost: they've played the park before, much lower down the bill, they're going to be around in the summer but have announced no dates as of yet.... I do of course realise that all of that is the most diabolical wishful thinking imaginable, but hey.

Thoughts?

now, I quite like that animal collective album, but regardless of aesthetic considerations, anyone who thinks Animal collective are a bigger act/draw than Doherty are deluding themselves. Especially if he's got Coxon and Mavers in his band.

Their catalogue is more than twice the size of Pete Doherty, a lot of us have been listening to them for years, and they have been consistently great. They are more deserving of a headline slot. Pete Doherty will have a larger draw in terms of numbers, but if that's the issue he should not be playing the Park stage. It's a small stage for lesser known, quality acts, of which Animal Collective are a perfect example and Doherty is not.

for one thing. i think animal collective would be a better alternative to bruce springsteen than pete doherty.

i mean, if you want to spend your saturday night watching a great one man (sic) show then i really think springsteen is the way to go.

animal collective clashing with kasabian then doherty with springsteen makes no sense. the toher way round would be much better for everyone. no matter who deserves what. doherty should be happy to play under animal collective or go play the JP instead.

i think thats a pretty reasonable argument.

I think you're being quite ignorant man, AC have seven studio albums and a load of EPs for a start. They also have a huge live reputation and are headlining Brixton Academy in the summer. Doherty has one album, a reputation for being all over the place live and his biggest London show recently seems to have been at Shepherds Bush which is about half the size of Brixton. Got some of this info from last.fm and noticed that Pete only has around 50,000 listeners whereas AC have well over 450,000! As recently as a year ago I probably would have agreed with you but Merriweather has (finally) made Animal Collective a high profile band as well as being THE BEST BAND IN THE f**kING WORLD

*ahem*

Not that I'm bias or anything..

Franz and Last Shadow Puppets were both surprise guests. Chaz and Dave are... well, Chaz and Dave, while Dizzee Rascal is, granted, a good exception to the rule.

Animal Collective could play for days

Anyway, it's all hollow, silly arguments, to be frank I'd rather Animal Collective didn't headline because then the clashes wouldn't be as bad. All I'm trying to express is that there is a large contingent that believe Animal Collective are one of the, if not the, best artists in the world right now. Pete Doherty is still a great musician, but in truth, currently he is at least a league below. He can't live off the Libertines forever.

Also, this is obviously a subjective opinion, but I don't think many people would claim Doherty has been involved in a "great" album since The Libertines.

Take Animal Collective, here are their most critically acclaimed, "great" albums, even leaving out some lesser known early material that is at least as good if not better:

Sung Tongs 2004

Feels 2005

Person Pitch 2007

Merriweather Post Pavilion 2009

Heck, I even left out Strawberry Jam. A lot of people love that album, just not my cup of tea.

Last great Doherty involved album: 2002, 2004 if you're being generous.

I think Pete's solo album is a good candidate for "lesser known and quality". Also he's got a catalogue of Libertines and Babyshambles songs to draw from, 5 albums + about 4 EPs between them, plenty of stuff to headline.

Doesn't really matter who headlines though, I don't want to see Kasabian or Bruce and will happily watch AC.

haha sorry! I did say being ignorant rather than are ignorant. I just thought perhaps you were unaware of certain facts. Apologies again, I get quite uptight when it comes to 'my boys' haha.
