Advice for a virgin please

Hi All

New to this forum and a Glastonbury virgin still at 38 years of age, ive spent countless years trying to tempt my wife along with me with the kids but Ive finally excepted that I aint going to turn the worm!

So this year is my first and all of a sudden i feel like a kid again waiting for Christmas day to come, i saw a couple of gigs last year (Gogol Bordello, Sea Sick Steve) off the back of watching the festival from my sterile living room.

After reading lots of threads of areas to camp what I would like to know is what is the possibility of getting a place to camp that isnt 24/7 full on if I arrive on the Thursday early evening ?

Any advice would be appreciated, cheers people you all seem like a decent bunch

If you can come in via the west car parks (or don't mind a long walk) the Dairy Ground should be ideal for you. It fills up much slower than other areas of the site and as it was a new area in 2007 it doesn't have the kind of loyal following that flock to the same fields year after year. It's got good facilities and as long as you don't mind a little bit of a trek to some parts of the site (pyramid, acoustic, circus, theatre) it should be ideal*.

*Apologies for Dairy Ground milk brand punn

You might have a problem come Thursday evening as it gets a bit tight.

My first glasto was last year (age then: not quite 40!!) and I got there Thursday late afternoon after a long wait because Blue route was closed due to a nearby fire and, at least coming in from Gate A, it was rammed. It might have been worse than usual because of everyone being punted around to Red route entrances. I managed to squeeze in at the top of Michaels Mead between two big tents, but it was pushing it a bit. Maybe other areas were less cramped, but I don't recall seeing any when wandering around Thursday evening... maybe further out in the newer camping fields??! This year, it's definately going to be Wednesday morning...

There are many camps set up by the great folk on here on Efest's

Camp Funk

etc

It is located in Pennards and will be housing around 120 efest bods, including myself, so its really a home from home, where you know your neighbours and can hook up with people to go and watch various bands etc.

There is an Efest meet on Wednesday and Thursday at the Cider Bus, Brothers Bar and loads of other places.

If you fancy it there is a MFG called , ask to join and see if you are Tempted!

Wednesday is a much much much better day to arrive though!

Cheers Strudders for the info, i like the sound of Pennards as it looks as though its on a slope, oh but wait a minute it isnt going to rain anyway!

All i need to do now is purchase around 120 pairs of ear plugs for the neighbours as the wife says i snore after a cider or two

I have been threatened before and almost smothered by the kids last year so you will be in good company!

Welcome Alf!

My first glasto was in 2005, we didn't see the point in getting there before the Thursday night as the main stages didn't open until Friday morning, but we regretted it because:

a) There were very few camping spaces left (too many gazebos etc) - we had to squeeze in between other tents, right beside the metal pathway so there was the noise of people walking past all night.

 We'd missed out on 2 days at Glasto! I know it's a bit of a cliche, but Glasto really is about a lot more than the bands, and it's nice to have these 2 days to wander around, aquaint yourself with the site and soak up all the sights and sounds!

I've always tried to get there on the Wednesday since, and this year I'm staying in a hotel in Bath on the Tuesday so that I get there as early as possible!

I've been waiting a whole year for this, so I don't want to miss a single hour of it!

If you can get the time off and not be in your missus bad books, I'd definately recommend getting there as early as possible!

Hello there welcome to the forums.

Last year was my first glastonbury and we arrived early thursday morning (7 oclock ish) and didn't feel as if we missed out on anything, plus there were plenty of spaces available in family camping where we stayed, not too sure about the others though.

If I were you I would arrive as early as you possibly can, Music plays quite a minimal role at glasto for some and some people even go the whole weekend without going anywhere near the main music stages. It's not like the other arena fests where the arena opens at a set time on friday saturday sunday, it's just one big site and there is loads (if not too much) to do on the days when the music isn't on. Heck, even if it didn't have the main stages it would still be impossible to fit everything in.

Also I have another bit of advice for you: Don't keep to a schedule, Highlight some of the bands that you despirately want to see in your guide but don't be too dissapointed if you discover a new band and completely forget about the other band you were ment to see. A good example was last year when we discovered this brilliant band Phantom Limb on the jazz stage, but half way through we had to leave to head to the pyramid to catch get cape wear cape fly, who played an average set.

Also try and have a wonder as often as you can to soak upthe atmosphere when there are no bands you want to see, and try exploring the cabaret feilds and green feilds aswell. This is what I will be doing this year, exploring the place a bit more and not sticking to the main stages.

Hope this advice helps.

Cheers,

BlackHole2006

I am one of a pair of regular glastonbuddies who leave our partners at home for Glastonbury. It is for the best. If they're not going to enjoy it, why make them come - they'd only spoil our enjoyment too. So good on yer.

Thursday evening, probably the easiest places to camp will be the least full-on. People cram themselves into the more central areas. In 2007 people complained about overcrowded campsites, but there were areas on the edge of the site that never filled up. Dairy Ground I think, possibly Paines.
