Chinese laterns?

Does anyone know if the gig at stone circle on Thursday night still going ahead?

''First ever mass (one-themed) fancy dress party at Glastonbury Festival 2009 on the Thursday of the festival at Stone Circle.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL FLASH MOB FANCY DRESS PARTY AT STONE CIRCLE''

AND:

At midnight, there will be a mass release of Chinese Sky Lanterns (assuming there is absolutely no wind).

Had read on another thread that these will be banned this year?

wanted to know about the policy with these "sky lanterns" too. There was loads last year on the wed/thurs. You'd see one go up across the feild then a mexican wave of cheers was soon to follow.

If there aceptable, might take some down myself.

What Paulo said. Glastonbury's not the sort of festival that asks people not to do things without a good reason is it now? Sky Laterns can look great, but they're like stoned V2 rockets heading across the site from the stone circle. There's not been a mass tent fire kicked of yet that i've heard of, but with that many people camped so close together and a fair breeze, it really wouldn't be pretty.

I've never made one or see one being lit. Always wanted to. Does anyone know how to make one? Or is it as simple as it looks?

They aren't actually for Glastonbury although secretly I have always fancied trying some. I can see why people hate them though and can see why maybe they aren't such a good idea in a village of tents!

I had intended to take some along to a friend's birthday party in the country a couple of weeks ago - but I completely forgot

I think if they're launched carefully by sober people in the right weather conditions (not much wind), they should be fine. They should stay afloat until the flame dies, then fall harmlessly to earth where they will become litter - but at least it's biodegradable litter.

I think the risk perceived by GFL - correctly - is that it only takes one intoxicated or overenthusiastic person messing around with one when there's too much wind, and suddenly you've got a ball of fire being blown into a campsite.

Which reminds me - in 95 or thereabouts, I saw a group of people trying to launch one of those tissue paper hot air balloons from the top of the pyramid field. It's quite a delicate job. Several people have to hold it in position until it's ready to go, and the heat source is a candle in the basket. It appeared to be going perfectly, and it was on its way up. Then one person forgot to let go of their tether, the whole thing tipped over, caught fire and collapsed. Fortunately nobody's tent caught fire.

Mind you, I don't think tents are as flammable as they used to be in the early days of synthetic materials.

lol...I wasn't stating that it did make it any safer. And also I have never set any off anyway. I never even manage to spend much time at the stone circle because I am crappy at staying awake. So don't worry, I won't be responsible for any tents burning down from lanterns (or for any other reason for that matter. lol)

No worries!

They do look amazing, and very pretty, when I first learnt of them, I also wanted to get a load to launch; but after seeing a fair few catch light once up in the air, and come back down at speed as a fireball, I realised the danger. Then there was that thread on TOS a couple of years back, where the official H&S guy got involved after a proposed mass launch; sky lanterns were then added as a prohibited item. They can also interfere with the helicopters, police and air ambulance for the site.

I love a bit of fire in the right place and Glastonbury festival is not the right place.

i was with some people last year who were setting them off and whilst they are nice to look at, once they start falling to ground (sometimes as a fireball as mentioned in a previous post) I worry what they might fall on; someone or some ones tent.

Don't light them please; they're not that special anyway.

Yeah, it was back then the official forums, that thread got locked down in the end after the H&S guy had posted to say please don't do this.

I'm sure that the legal implications of the forums weighed in the decision to stop their relationship with them.
