Wine

Coming down from Edinburgh on the coach. I thought taking a box of wine would be a really good idea but then my partner pointed out that with all the luggage getting crammed into the bottom of the bus, there may be a possibility of the wine bag inside the box bursting :) so would I be better off transferring a few bottles into plastic bottles??

The cardboard box is quite strong, I'm sure it would be fairly resistant to being squashed. If there's that much squashing, bottles could break as well.

It may be easier to pack or not, if you transferred the wine into 500ml water bottles, you'd have six to pack for example.

Last year i decided to freeze the wine. You need to let some out if you think it might burst the bag (I didn't need to) and put it in the freezer about a week before because the alcohol takes a while to freeze. That way you get cool wine AND can't burst the bag on the coach!

I expect you're right about only the water content freezing, when we did it before there was a little that wouldn't freeze, but i think alot of the alcohol was trapped within the ice. Either way, as long as you let it thaw before you drink it, it's a good way of stopping the bag popping

i was discussing this very issue with my girlfriend last night

we're driving down so obviously there's no baggage limit but we have to consider how to lug the rucksack/tent/everything else from car to field

i think the boxes (or cartons) of wine are a better bet. Like others have said if the stress is enough to break a carton/bag then it'll be enough to burst a bottle. plus the boxes are easier to pack than 6 single bottles, and the inner bag can be chucked into a rucksack/handbag for easy access around the festival site

We take wine boxes. At Glasto the plastic bag gets removed from the box and transferred into a light small rucksack to carry round for the day along with a few paper cups. Then we have drink on tap all day long.

me too i got a degree combined degree in it and did it at A- level

Ethanol freezes at -117 C, your freezer gets as cold as -18C

Dont think your freezer goes that cold....do you?? lol

It wouldnt be pure alcohol no, but not far off..... They distill it off in franctions coz it will be pure then....this going from memory, but i think it 76C it boils off at.....also any solid impurities wouldnt come off so you get it more refined......I could go on....but you get idea....

the wine that comes in boxes is very durable.. i went by coach to both glasto and leeds last year and had no problem. i reckon the cartons might be less durable due to the fact the cardboard isn't as tough as the boxes you get wine in...
