Tent Repairs!

Hello!

Does any know where to get tents repaired or how much it costs? Mine has a big slash through both the outer and inner layers due to being robbed last year :( We patched it up with gaffer tape then and it was fine, but there was no rain either so I'm not sure it'll be fine this year!

Or are there any home repairs I can carry out on it? We've largely ignored the problem because we couldn't afford Glasto this year - then we ended up getting last minute tickets anyway and am now panicking trying to sort everything out!!!

Thanks in advance :(

I'd always try to repair it rather than chuck it (doesn't seem the Glastonbury way). There's loads of waterproof repair tape options. Quick search found this. There's loads of other options. I even got Gore Tex patches to repair my waterproof trousers after the rainy years in the 90s (they obviously were only made for climbing Everest, not for jumping around in fields).

Go to a camping shop. You can get a clear tape sold in foot long (or longer?) lengths for tent repair.

I had my brand new tent set on fir last year and then ripped so I have a 5 cm hole and a foo and a half slash. I'm meaning to repair it properly but the tape seems to be holding. If you can get some similar nylon then cut it to the right size and stitch it to the tent... Back stitch would be best (where you go back and through your last stitch so you get a chain)... do a couple of rows going all the way round the cut, one of them close to the edge of the patch and then apply seam sealant to the stitches. You may also need to fabsil the patch.... This is what i'm planning to do anyway so hopefully it should work

I used a tent I'd repaired for about ten years. I got a repair kit from a camping shop, only cost a few pounds I think. Simply sew a new patch over your slash on the outer tent, or find some glue that will do the trick. I used a seam sealant too just to make sure. It didn't look too pretty admittedly, but it never leaked, and it put up with some heavy abuse from rain, mud and the usual festival problems!

backstitch??

Cheers for the advice guys, also have to repair the inner bit to stop spiders getting in or the OH will be living in constant fear!

Will look into these tent repair kits!

I've used standard Bostik All Purpose Glue successfully for nylon tent repairs. Cut a patch and apply glue to both surfaces, wait a minute or two and then press together.

(If it's a large/long strip it can take too long (and get messy) to apply the glue in one go, so do a few inches at a time)

I grafted a new 5ft long bottom edge of a fly sheet this way with a strip taken off another tent (eye-holes and all) and it outlasted the tent.

Like the above post, I have used Bostick for a patch but then I will double sew around the patch and then seal with Thomson waterseal.

Dependant on the material another way is to keep the patch in place by ironing it on with "Wonderweb" (use a wet tea towel over the patch), and then sew in place and seal it up.
