The punter would have to drop that pill in whilst the drinks were on the counter with the customer or being carried by the purchaser. No punter can get to the pre-poured drinks behind the bar.

What about a bar person, who in a rush, accidentally dropped one into the drinks by mistake?

we went back to the bar to have a look and see how it could have happened. believe me when I say the drinks were very easily accessible. There were tons on the bar, and more behind (maybe 5 inches lower). It was an extremely busy bar and we're sure it was done there as ukslim said too

.....i was stomping like a possesed lord of the rings baddy, convinced i was marching into hell, but i wasn't scared, quite the opposite. the only thing that was annoying me was the orks that kept swooping in on me.....

must have been quite worrying, i doubt it was done for any malicious intent, as said by others, perhaps someone thought it would be funny..without really thinking it through etc

especially if the person who takes the spiked drink has never done these drugs before,it could be quite scary & disastrous

i never get offered drinks by strangers, but i wouldn't take one even if i was (or id take it and just leave it/tip it away)

MANDELA.jpg

In every WBC Bar that has space to use a ' MDU ' { or cow for short } the MDU is at the rear of the Bar otherwise staff would trip over the pipe work.

this is from Reading but the layout of the MDN is the same

http://www.wbc-team.co.uk/wbc-image-reading-2007-2.html

Each MDU can dispense 12 pints at a time although its possible to have six cider and six lager { or whatever }

Five feet in front of the MDU is where the tray is placed down .

When the Bar is quiet there may only be a few pints waiting but when the bar is busy production is stepped up and there can be a few dozen { it really depends on demand }

In a very busy Bar where drinks are flying out a tray can be emptied in five seconds as Servers { the staff that work at the Counter } will be waiting for a tray - as soon as it has been put down its gone.

The idea is to get production up to match demand - if demand drops down the MDU Operator will stop banging out pints.

The drinks table is not reachable from the front of the Bar otherwise jokers would be helping themselves.

Poured Pints are never left on the Bar for the same reason

In my twenty years with the WBC I have never heard of any staff doing such a thing as after all if a person wanted to spike a drink I would have thought they would want to see the effect so spiking a random drink is really unthinkable.

When a drink is ordered its moved up to the Counter but in a busy Bar you could get a joker who is waiting for a drink to slip something in but that is true of any Pub.

The Mandela Bar can be a busy bar although not as busy as some.

I have worked in bars long before the MDU was invented and I can even recall when the beer taps were on the Counter { like a normal Pub } but that was long before the large events the WBC works at now and really if Customers want their drinks fast then they will stay.

I know a good proportion of the WBC voluntary staff and take it from me they don't have the money to drop in any pills in a strangers drink.

If a drink was spiked it would have happened at the bar by a joker standing next to him that way the spiker would be able to observe the effect.

By the way bar staff are not allowed to drink alcohol while they are working although once their shift is at a end the Tent Manager may go back in and grab some drinks for them - only a complete idiot would drop a pill in a drink right in front of Customers and staff and they would have to be the Village idiot to then put down the drink on the dispensing table.

Drinks that are left on the dispensing table are never left for all that long but if there is a sudden drop you may see the drinks poured into buckets as the WBC will endeavour not to sell stale drinks.

I have worked on loads of MDU's over the years and I know how quickly a few dozen can shift from the dispensing table so this perception that the drinks have been standing for hours is just pure rubbish.

i've had it happen at a gig. i was dancing like a bit of a dick and i must have pissed someone off. i wasn't very drunk at all. i remember taking the last sip of my drink and then it was like i blinked and woke up in hospital on an IV drip.

it was the worst night of my life. it can happen anywhere so its always worth being a little careful. buts its very unlikely and probably quite a lot less likely at glasto. as long as you try and watch your drink (not hard if you're drinking from a bottle) you are 99.99% likely to be fine.

but its worth being aware of i guess.

iv had my drink spiked in town before, it can be nasty!

walking home at half 3 in the morning with the most suicidal thoughts running through my head. every car that passed was a test to see if id throw myself in front of it. luckily i didnt but it did seem like an amazing idea at the time. worst experience of my life!
