Is there too much 'Dad-Rock' this year?

Have they got the balance wrong?

  1. 1. Are there too many heritage acts on in 2009?

There is an abundance of old school music but it depends where your looking - if you look at the dance areas and said that you'd be talking cobblers.

That said, I think the pyramid stage could do with some young blood as a headline act. Neil Young, Springsteen and Blur are old news no matter what any one says and while I agree that music isn't something particularly affected by age (my top played are the Doors & Nick Drake & both = dead as you like) I do think one young, new act would freshen it up and add a bit more diversity to the mix. KOL & Jay Z last year and the Killers the year before - not everyones cup of tea but they're singing songs about the life & culture us yoot are rooted in - musical time capsuals - so it would be nice to see them shine while they're still shiny.

I'm still sulking at the lack of Faithless & Radiohead though. Every bloody year I get my hopes up!

Erm yeah, music IS ageless, but the term dad rock is merely a functional reference to a type of music. You say its a rubbish term, but yet you know exactly the type of music it refers too. That for me just makes it a fairly useful genre description.

edit: for the record 'no' and 25

I am 45 but feel about 25 - going to Glastonbury helps me keep that way - the range of music is awesome and I would love more hippy stuff - but this year with Gong and Steve Hillage I am well catered for. I have discovered some "new" music for me every year - and been surprised that they are usually already quite famous with my teenage daughters back home...!

Not at all. I'm 21 and my favourite music is from the 60's. I don't think it matters how old you are, you either enjoy the music or you don't. Anyway, its only the pyramid stage that has a few older acts. There soooo many more modern day bands across the festival but you don't get older people complaining about that! There's definitley enough entertainment to keep everyone happy

No, and I've just turned 25 the other day (25-44 is a pretty big bracket)

I can think of what, 5 bands on the line that fall under that category, and a lot more who don't, so no.

Plus Neil Young- dad rock? This would be the Neil Young who pretty much invented grunge? The Neil Young who's influenced Radiohead, Nirvana and SunnO))))? Wow, dad rock's pretty exciting.

Also, my dad hates Springsteen where as I love him, so I'd discount him too!

People seem to think Glastonbury should have some kind of mathematical formula for picking the line up to create this mystical "balance" when the reality is 1. The line up is designed to appeal to everyone and 2. Financially Glastonbury is not on a level playing field with other fesivals so I think people are really unappreciative of how amazing this year's pyramid headliners are!

Been brought up on the stuff! I am going to stand up and be counted and say I will be watching the Quo on whatver day they are on (unless its Sat and they clash with Rolfy!) Tbh...have been waiting all my Glastonbury going years for a line up like this one. Just a shame Fleetwood Mac and Coldplay arent putting in an appearance!

 Ducks for cover! :D

Seriously people, get over it. If you don't want to see Neil Young, go see Doves or Bloc Party or Animal Collective. If you don't want to see Springsteen, go see Jarvis f**king Cocker, or Franz Ferdinand, or 2 many dj's or whatever. I am still undecided between Jarvis vs Springsteen. I am now leaning towards the Boss since I've never seen him, will be seeing Jarvis twice the week before Glasto and again in July, and I doubt I will get a good spot in the John Peel tent by the time Emmy the Great's set ends, if the clash finder is as accurate as people say.

what is this Dad Rock you speak of?

Well, that was actually my point... Not that it matters, if you want to put a negative label on most of the music that have been released.. then I think you are a bit simple.

When I think about it, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Blur, Emeniem, Oasis, Radiohead and so on.. is "dad rock" by now..
