If you don't like this song, don't bother?

There's been a few threads along the lines of "what songs should I listen to, to get into Neil Young" or "what songs should I listen to, to get into Springsteen", or whatever.

I want to turn that on its head.

For any act from the lineup you choose, pick a song that you could play someone, and if they don't like it right away, they might as well abandon hope of ever liking that artist.

Or, explain why that approach might not work for a certain act.

Kicking things off: if you don't like We Almost Had a Baby, you've no hope of liking Emmy the Great.

I would actually to that to Blur's credit it can't be done for them. However, if they don't like Tender, they should give up on music altogether.

Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia

Not his most typical work soundwise.. but the lyrics is somewhat typical.

But, many of the acts who has been around for awhile have done many diverse and different styles.. so the make or break thing with one song is not the best approach..

I love Neil Young and Springsteen, and indeed Floyd, Free, Lynerd Skynard, Carol King, Janis Ian, Janis Joplin, indi stuff such as Airborne Toxic Event at al we don't hear much in UK and on and on - but for all of them the "popular" songs and/or singles are mostly their worst efforts.

As for "if you don't like xxxxxxx then you don't like music"..... Have a listen to Michael Parkinson on the radio and he'll tell you that anything the isn't Sinatra, Jack Jones a such isn't music - is he right?
