scrap the long-drops and portaloos, compost toilets are the way forward....

Just returned from the Sunrise festival, and the toilets there are way better than the toilets at Glasto. They are compost toilets which offer privacy walls and doors between them, though they do not have a top. This means fresh air gets rid of some of the smell. Similar to the long-drops really. But the difference is that everytime anyone takes a dump they then empty a cup of sawdust down there. And this really does help to get rid of the unpleasant smell. In fact there's hardly any smell of s and p atall. Whereas the long-drops there is often an unpleasant smell in them. And as for the portaloos..... YUCK very unpleasant smell due to them being closed in and the volume of people using them. I really try to avoid those things.

Can we have compost toilets at Glasto next year please?

The closest thing to this in Glasto is the African pit latrines in the King's Field.

I never bothered though - too much queueing and I'm comfortable with the long drops.

There are composting toilets at the Big G...there was a large group of them at the base of the green Fields but have some vague recollection of one having to pay at least £2 for the privilege.

I too, much prefer composting toilets, been using them all over Australia and Waveform a couple of years ago was my first experience. But Glasto is just too large for mass composting imo. The mountain of sawdust needed would just be too much. And trying to educate nearly 175,000 with the do's and dont's would be too much of a logistical nightmare.

Maybe one day but all the time a poosucker can come along and get rid of all the liquid waste pretty easily then the days of sawdust, no smells and a much more environmentally friendly way of dealing with human waste are far off.

Ickle festies with right minded respectable people yes but realistically...the Big G...no.

I went to Sunrise last year (HERES MY EFEST REVIEW), and thats all they had. I then spent the summer trying to persuade every festival I work at to get them. They need emptying less, smell better, easy to assemble and good the environment.

The amount of flack I got. "Oh but this is a big festival". Sunrise had over 6000 people in a filed and there was not a smell of a shit anywhere!!

Whilst we're on the subject of loos.

Why do the doors on the loos at Glasto have to shut so aggresively and loudly? It's like the springs on the doors are all three times stronger than they need to be. If you're anywhere near them it's just a constant, metal upon metal, slam slam slam, which is annoying whether you are trying to listen to a band or sleep. Totally unecessary IMO.
