Why so many Special Guests?

Looking through Halvin’s superb clash finder I’ve noticed loads of ‘Special Guests’ listed.

1 at Pyramid Stage on Friday

2 at The Park on Friday

1 at Club Dada on Friday

1 at The Park on Saturday

2 at Queens Head on Saturday

I realise there have been threads on this forum talking about ONE special guest on the Park on Friday but why so many secret guests? Is this normal?

Are they all different acts that will be kept secret till the festival or will some have their identities released before the date?

Will they all be ‘top’ names or are some just being kept secret for some sort of contractual reasons.

Does anyone know which slot on the Friday at the Park will be the one that The Libertines are hotly rumoured to be playing? The 5.30pm or 8.00pm slot?

Sorry for so many questions but I want to try and get my head round it before the festival. I don’t want to spend the entire time running between the secret gigs making sure I don’t miss anything special if they aren’t going to be that special.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

Thanks.

I wouldn't run between the stages on the off chance they are special. I might catch the Saturday guest at the Park since I'm planning to see Schmolo, but there are plenty of decent acts to catch that aren't secret!

Klaxons are sure to be one of them, after the 6 Music hints the other day.

I think they are quite often bands that have not been confirmed yet. They need to get programs, guides etc printed at some point, so if they band hasn't confirmed "Special Guest" looks better than TBC.

But as it has been well known some are actually secret ones, like Franz last year.

One of these years they aren't going to tell us at all who is playing - you have to guess who is playing where and when!!! :P

quite like the idea of special guests to be honest but it is a bit frustrating if you are not sure whether to seek them out or not because the could be... well... not that special.

(think the idea of publishing guides its about right)

i think it's worth pointing out that when FF played the Park on Friday last year, the time was different from that in the Guardian Guide or the official programme.

they said 19.45 in the guide, it was actually about 22.00 when they came on.

unless you're certain who and when, why would you waste precious moments of the best party on Earth waiting around for someone who may not be there!

Only a very small percentage of people at the festival would see them handing out flyers. I don't remember seeing anything about it in the Q paper or on here before the festival. So if you compare the level of secrecy between that and this year's NERD set (assuming the rumours are true) then it was quite secret.
