Lions Game

I wanted to just stay out of this thread.

I'm gutted I'm missing the game, but hey that's the way life goes. I'll still get to see the first and thrid tests.

I wanted to stay out because I knew there would be the usual ignorant view of rugby, of public school boys and all that nonsense. I could've put money on not being disappointed on that front.

To all those who bang on about toffs, come down for my team in Surrey 3 on a Saturday morning and tell the teams we play they're toffs - but maybe not if you're fond of working body parts eh.

Good day.

I don't think any harm was meant. People often forget that Ireland is not part of Britain( not that its a good thing), especially when talknig about rugby because you only have the iternational side ireland, not nothern ireland and ireland.

The name is the Britsh and Irish Lions and the team would not be as good if you took any one country away.

No.

Swansea wasn't in England last time I looked.

Rugby is very much a multi class sport in Wales.

Call anyone a tit in my local for liking rugby and the result will be very much as I suggested.

I also deliberately excluded Scotland as from my understanding it's got quite a posh fanbase up there as well, not that there is anything wrong with that, just that from many peoples blinkered viewpoint they are also toffs.

Anyway, I'm pleased it's on for the sake of those who want to see it.

Nothing like mentioning rugby union for stirring ignorant class-war type posts.

Whoa, easy tiger! My geography's just about sufficient to recognise Welsh cities. I'm from Liverpool, where although RL predominates there's a strong union tradition (I played both codes at school). Far from trotting out cliched bollocks about class I was merely questioning how you could reconcile good behaviour with kicking someone's teeth in and the stridency of your last post still leaves me none the wiser.

However, I'm also very glad it's being shown.

I didn't reconcile good behaviour and kicking someones teeth in. Sorry if that's how it came across. I said England rugby fans behaved better generally than England football fans.

My second point was that in Wales rugby is liked by the vast majority of the population. My local has a fairly working class population, and to call them tits for liking rugby would not go down well, especially with the implication they were toffs. I could probably have made this point better.

Are we friends again?

Edit: I'm English by the way, but have lived in Wales for years now. I have been treated with hostility for wearing England shirts on football and rugby match days here, but that's a totally different issue.

I played rugby with people at university and school who sadly would only to happily embrace the very worst of the stereotypical rugby player behaviours. I never understood it, but loved the game so much I ignored it. Stayed for a pint after the game and made my excuses and left to avoid it. I was not alone.

No worries Doc (I seem to remember you posting a while back that you are qualified)! There's sometimes so much nonsense posted on these boards it's often an effort to sort the wheat from the chaff & wires are easily crossed (or indeed metaphors easily mixed!) - and as a Scouser I get as exasperated by lazy, ill-informed stereotyping as you do about the tarring of all rugby fans with the same brush so, yes, I understand completely where you're coming from. And certainly no question which sport has the better-behaved fans.

And if (certain parts of) Swansea's anything like it was in the early 80s when I went to see Everton play then you've got balls wearing an England shirt down there! B)
