Glastonbury Shopping List

Okay - We've almost reached the point where it will be two weeks until the masses start to leave and I've basically yet to buy anything and in my current financial position I'm not really at a point where I can buy much - let's just say - all I've got so far is a sleeping bag and a tent - I've never been camping before so I don't have any of the stuff already and I have £50 at most to my name.

Now - there's nothing my mum likes more than an excuse for a big shopping trip so I was hoping if all you festival experts out there could help me to compile a little list to send her off with. Obviously - I'm trying to spend as little money as possible and I'm sure that as long as the list wasn't too extensive she wouldn't mind paying for it all herself and this is why I'm asking for your help. I'm aware that there are already lists out there - and very extensive ones at that - but this isn't really something I can really use. Basically I need a list of the absolute essentials - to a certain extent - the length of the list isn't important more the price - if she felt it was necessary she wouldn't mind paying for anything - for example, if I still needed a tent she'd happily buy me one - but I can't push my luck asking for new waterproof coats, alcohol etc. the luxuries will have to come out of my own pocket.

So - in a nutshell - I need a list of festival essentials that I can give to my mum and tell her to try and get all the stuff on it within the next two weeks, remembering that my list currently stands at a tent and a sleeping bag - and I've never been camping before so assume complete ignorance on my part. :)

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

I'd say the absolute basics would be:

  • rucksack (at least 60l....Tesco and Sains both had these for £15 last year)

  • Roll mat (£4 - £5)

  • wellies (£7+...cheapest from the market!)

  • Sun cream (£1+)

  • paracetemol (16p)

  • food (crisps/cereal bars/pasties) ('bout a fiver's worth?)

So that's, what, 30 quid's worth of stuff?

EDIT: forgot a torch.

Okay - I've been through the list and deleted as much as I think is safe to delete (so tell me if I've removed something vital) and got it down to about 40 items. A lot of them are items that I will already have but may require some searching around the house for and therefore are left on the list as a reminder (for example: Carrier bags, bottle opener, mobile phone (will take an old nokia with loads of spare batteries) etc.) and the rest are things which I will buy.

I realised that earlier I didn't make myself clear. My mum is insistent that I'll need a camping stove and some food, but as a lazy and poorly house-trained person I'd much rather go and buy food when I need it and snack throughout the day to keep that need at bay as much as possible. I'm aware that this will cost money but I've budgeted for it. My mum has told me she will give me some money to take with me (because I've been off work following on operation, so a quick sob story and I've secured myself maybe £100-odd of investment) so that takes my budget - hopefully - up to around £150. With that I'll have to spend maybe £20 on alcohol before I arrive - £15 on junk food to keep me going over the 5/6 days (cereal bars as breakfast everyday - water, chocolate, crisps etc.), around £30 to fill my car up once - although I hope to pass this responsibility onto my lift sharers. Oh and I want to buy something to play my ipod through my car speakers during the journey which will probably be about £20 and then factor in maybe £20 in buying some cheap clothes to wear and other little bits.

With some quick maths that's about...£75-100 pounds leaving me with £50+ to spend on sustainance over the weekend. I can easily live off one proper meal a day as long as it's accompanied by some well placed snacking so about £6/7 a day for that and then the rest on alcohol - oh - and a couple weeks more wages before we leave (as I've just started back at work) so hopefully it should all be sorted financially - just about.

Anyway - a lot of rambling to basically say - anything missing from my bare-bones list?

Wellies

If short of cash bring your oun booze and balance up the cost of buying food to buying your own supplies (Camping stove) and food plus the time to get to and from your camp and cook on a one ring cooker. I am a little bit biased as I cook all year round and the food away from the usuall burger vans is good (my advise look at the food other people are coming away with or if you see someting tastey ask where they got it from everyone is frendly) If you have been to a festival before then this is much bigger and I would advise proper footwear ie boots that you have worn in. Blisters from all that walking is not good. Clothing lots of layers and don't bring anything that you don't mind loosing

i take basically;

baseball cap/hat - i get sun burnt easily!

alcohol

baccy/rizla/filters

lighters

and alcohol wet wipes

a chair

and obviously a few items of clothing

but thats all , nothing like some people, no bottle opener/tin opener, don't see the need, shouldn't be taking glass bottles in anyway

that's about it
