List of bands with genres

Anyone know of a list of bands with genres next to them

I am slowly going through all the bands looking for new stuff to look out for but it is taking hours. The housework and studies have gone out the window and I'm sure thats all going to come back & hit me soon.

If there was such a list at least it would help me with genres I dont want to see

So excited .... not long now

Love this site too much

genres (particularly the 'sub' kind) are for those without interest in music. There are really only two genres of music - good music and bad music.

The only time I ever find "genres" helpful is on my ipod so I can shuffle based on what sort of stuff I want to hear or what what the people around me might want to hear. It's mostly nonsense but helps to filter out things that don't "fit" and would go a bit like this...

- Indie Rock for things like White Stripes, Oasis, Maximo Park, Arctic Monkeys, Libertines.

- Dance/Electronic when I want things like Mr Scruff, Chemical Brothers, MGMT, Justice, The Streets, Death In Vegas

- Singer/Songwriter for Badly Drawn Boy, Stephen Fretwell, Bright Eyes, Nick Cave, Morrissey etc

- Rock for Foo Fighters, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Biffy Clyro, Queens Of The Stone Age etc

I used to have the genre of "shite" until I realised the one Kaiser Chiefs song I owned had no place on my ipod at all! Who on earth let them get their hands on I Heard It Through The Grapevine?

Someone put this rather handy webpage together for the Primavera Sound festival. There appears to be source code for it here. So it might be possible to change it to work for the Glastonbury lineup (though it appears to be more complex than just editing the band list). Maybe someone with a bit more scripting experience than myself could look through it and see what needs to be done.

the thing is, what I might label as 'rock' someone else would dispute.

eFestivals long ago considered genre-ising our listings, and decided it would be both a hiding to nothing, and bad for music and festivals overall. Who wants to limit their musical choices in such a way? No one I'd hope. :)

Whilst I like music from many different genres I can recognise that I like more of some genres than others. To that end if I want to actively seek out something new at Glastonbury (in addition to stumbling across something) it would be handy to have a list of roughly which genre(s) each artist fits into.

I'm not saying that efestivals should provide this, but to dismiss the idea of genres is ludicrous.

if anyone is able to give a list of genres and what definitively fits in one of those genres but no other then I'll do it.

I know I'm safe on this one. :)

Well if putting Desmond Dekker in the Reggae section and Big Daddy Kane in the Rap/Hip Hop section is marketing then it's the type of marketing that is ok by me.

Do you have the same opinion of classifications in a library? Would books just be either fiction or non-fiction.
