Well if putting Desmond Dekker in the Reggae section and Big Daddy Kane in the Rap/Hip Hop section is marketing then it's the type of marketing that is ok by me.

Do you have the same opinion of classifications in a library? Would books just be either fiction or non-fiction.

the problem with any classifications is that very often things fit into more than one classification (tho that doesn't happen with fiction/non-fiction). Which is why it's a hiding to nothing.

trouble with genres is that it limits people's taste and makes people have preconceptions about the music they like and dislike.

exactly - and when you translate that onto festivals, it has people ruling out festivals they'd otherwise enjoy.

eFestivals is run on the basis that any festival could be to your interest, so check out what's there. :)

Clearly it's not a straight choice between all talk of genres being marketing bollox, and every band being classifiable exactly down to one genre. The truth is somewhere in the middle. I'm going to stick my neck out and say that Jay-Z makes hip hop music, but I couldn't tell you what genre Bat For Lashes are part of. (Whatever it is, it's occupied by a: Kate Bush and b: Bat for Lashes).

Bowie is a bit of a cheat as he changed his sound so much, but still some genre classifications are meaningful in his case. Ziggy Stardust, for example, is a glam rock album.

Genre talk can be useful when trying to describe someone's sound, but it won't get you anywhere with communicating how good something is. As far as I can see, every genre there's ever been contains some good and some bad music.

In fact, I'm tempted to say that if thinking in genre terms means you exclude yourself from music you might like, then it's mainly your fault for being narrow-minded.

Anyway, mandb, if you want to save time with your research, can I suggest the /index.php?showtopic=114616">Spotify playlist? That way you can easily listen and decide for yourself.

The moderator of this forum is so far up his own arse

Yes some music is impossible to generalise but some artists/bands can be loosely linked to other artists/bands due to similar musical tones, progressions, rhythm, ethics etc

And yes there are some stupid genres (IDM being one of the worst) made up as marketing strategies but i think the poster was wanting the more general loose genres

If finding a list helps the poster to have a better festival then is nothing wrong with it

Simples

:(

People are allowed to do what they like with making the best of their festival. That has f**k all to do with whether an genre names he might choose to follow have any real meaning tho.

Genres aren't helpful when it comes to big acts like David Bowie etc which don't easily fit into genres but in some cases genres are very easy to define and very useful

e.g.

Dubstep

Reggae

Heavy Metal

etc

the music within each of these types of genres will all sound very similar.

Thus for smaller lesser-known acts using words like dubstep will tell you exactly what your getting, because there is very little variation between those kind of acts. In other cases, a full description is necessary.
