rks01
I remember the smoking ban coming in last year and people being worried, but I'm guessing nothing changed? I'm not a smoker, but I thought I might be having a few this glasto so I thought I'd make sure.
FunkyDenz
Smoking is banned inside the tents, although this is difficult to enforce in the larger tents. I didn't go pre-smoking ban, so can't comment on if it made a difference, it didn't impact on my smoking during the festival.
HandFedFred
Yeah be careful if you try to smoke inside. I saw some of the fire stewards/security being over zelous and dragging people out, stealing thier drugs or whatever from some of the dance tents last year. Actually I'm thinking it was more likely secutity doing this.
pie_and_a_pint
Stewards will tell people to extinguish lit ciggies - 'herbal' or otherwise, inside tents, and they do persist and will chuck you outside if you don't do as they say. They have to really - the festival's licence is at stake if people are allowed to break the law by smoking inside.
Craig_G
It's a bit harsh in a tent I think as was a bit irritating last year. Especially when you're in a relatively quiet tent with loads of space and 3 walls off the thing....
glasto_mongrel_2008
I got done in the Leftfield tent last year but they just asked me to put it out. To be fair the tent was empty and it was bloody obvious. I'd just totally forgotten that it wasn't allowed though.

Pinhead
In some tents they didn't seem to give a sh1t, mostly the smaller less official ones anyway. Pretty much all the bigger tents had security that told people to put 'em out. Suddenly remembered the security chaps trying to talk those Brothered up geezers in the Jazzworld field down from the flag poles they kept climbing to try outdo one another as to how high high they could get. Dunno how that flashback image popped in there . . .

HandFedFred
really?
Storm_NL
It's a ridiculous law. Most of the tents are higher than your average ceiling by a long way, so it's not as if the smoke "hangs about". On occasions, I was surrounded by smokers in a couple of the tents last year, but I played fair and didn't light up 'til I got outside. Didn't see any security nonsense though. Anyhoo, I believe the law only applies if the tent has a certain percentage of "wall" coverage. Ladies and Gentlemen... I give you the most draconian anti-smoking laws in the world... fur_q
Don't be suprised if the ban is more strictly enforced this year. MDC where pretty critical of the festival last year in the debreif report in terms of smoking in tents Anyhoo, I believe the law only applies if the tent has a certain percentage of "wall" coverage. beergut100
Has anyone tried those electric fags? You're allowed to "smoke" them in pubs etc. Was thinking of getting one.
FunkyDenz
Not tried them, but saw a DJ with one, allowed him to play his 2 hour set without having to run outside for a fag break.
derfman
im not a smoker but i dont see the point in a smoking ban at a festival, its all part and parcel....if people are gonna sit around black smoke fires im sure they can put up with fag smoke
Frenchie1973
Last year I saw several people being asked to put them out but I didn't see anyone being that heavy-handed with the requests. (I did see security being very heavy-handed in the Stonebridge Bar in the Park but don't think that was over smoking!) The same penalties apply as in the outside world and they can't risk their license so I'm sure that you would generally be asked to put it out if you're seen.... robin
It's more to do with fire hazards inside tents than because of the smoking ban, just the smoking ban makes an easier reason because people have heard about it with the more recent law changes. Woppa
And in the 70s people were less likely to be stopped for drink driving. I guess it makes it ok if it was allowed in the past.
Pinhead
Wonder if anyone will do the Brother's Cup wheels and stacks again this year. Honestly, the atmosphere around there was great last year with all sorts of shenanegans going on.

MDC where pretty critical of the festival last year in the debreif report in terms of smoking in tents AFAIK it's to do with the number of walls that enclose it and the % of roof covering it as to wether it's considered an enclosed space but on the whole both the aurthorities and licencees tend to err towards the not allowing smoking in where there's a gray area
clockworkpurple
Saw that too. The one guy got proper marched off by security. Hope he was ok.
robin
Did cigarettes not present a fire hazard before the smoking ban then? They didn't ask people to put them out before it to my recollection.
