More bland pop rubbish dressed up as 'real' music, 27 Dec 2006

By Mr. M. Read "mdaread" (Bristol, England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: These Streets (Audio CD)

Pop has it's place, no problem with that. What does annoy me is when pop music i.e. forgettable, meaningless, fluffy noise tries to pass itself off as music to be taken seriously as seems to be happening more and more these days with bands like Kaiser Chiefs, Snow Patrol, James Blunt etc thinking that if you're holding a guitar it suddenly becomes worthy. Wrong. This album is boring, pointless, uninspired twaddle from a pillock who thinks that if he has a fringe, a guitar and a slightly gruff voice, it becomes grown up music. It doesn't.

Someone elses opinion....

He's a goon now lets move on :O You like him, that's fine, I don't think he's credible, I think he's a fake, appropriating a new style to gain credibility. Just what I get from him, we all have different interpretations, thats ok isnt it? If we all played it safe and nodded to Radio 1, saying "yeah I love this Paulo shite!" then there would be no debates which are always entertaining!

As for Fleet Foxes v Paulo Nutini :):D:):):) PAULO NUTINI GOT HIS BREAK AT A DAVID SNEDDON (FAME ACADEMY 'FAME') GIG, REPEAT HE WENT TO A DAVID SNEDDON GIG...HE WAS INTO DAVID SNEDDON!:lol: Sorry I'm getting annoying now....

Yup, exactly!

I don 't like "x" because 8 year old girls buy it.

I don't like "y" because dads like it

I don't like "z" because indie kids like it

Maybe if you write your own music, and can organise your own band to play it with you, and make a dollar out of it, you've got credibility. If Simon Cowell or equivalent is involved you haven't.

That's not to say you'll appeal to everyone.

(did I plummit to my doom, or amaze the circus audience?)

Good effort! The fact is that credibility as a single entity cant be defined - and what people invariably mean by lacking credibility is 'I dont like them and my musical taste is significantly better than anyone who does'. Now whilst Id once have agreed on the Cowell thing, I cant come up with a single argument that says Diversity don't have credibility - about the most talented and most original bunch of people Ive seen in aeons. Are we to deny them credibility because they found an audience BGT?

The point Im trying to make about Fleet Foxes is that Into My Arms suggested their album was possibly the best of the decade - when i dont even think it was the best of the year. Taste and credibility aren't the same thing as some would try to intellectualise the argument as being so.

I'm kind of with you, but sadly my music snobbery prevents me from watching BGT. I am vaguely aware of what they do, but watching dancers isn't really my thing. If they are really good, and make a career out of it, and Cowell's freak show has been their lucky break then good luck to them. I think it's the unjustified hype and publicity attached to most of his crap that puts me off.

I hear there is quite a rush to get Susan Boyle's album out. Whilst she has undoubtably got a good voice, I won't be buying it for the sake of expanding my musical horizons. For me her "credibility" extends to having an above average voice and nothing more, and for me Paolo Nutini is more credible, despite him (IMO) not actually being that good.
