Drowned in Sound's "rough and biased guide" to what to see at Glastonbury

drowned in sound is much better than the nme, i don't regularly read either but DiS are good for tiny new bands that haven't got albums out yet.

i liked this too:

"Then it’s Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Fair enough, haterz. We’ve heard your objections. He’s old. You’re one of the surprisingly large number of people who still don’t know what the lyrics to ‘Born In The USA’ are actually about. The odour of masculinity and car oil is too strong on him. One listen to ‘Thunder Road’ makes you feel pathetically inadequate about your own torpid excuse for a day to day existence. You hate everything that is good in everything. Those are all fine excuses."

To be honest I think you should give them credit for how inclusive they are ... Baaba Maal, Tindesticks, Roots Manuva, Africa Express, Emilliana Torrini... hardly the staples of NME these days...

Also just because a band is new/flavour of the month doesn't actually mean they're crap and not worth seeing. At least DiS don't build and destroy bands like the NME, The Horrors are a prime example 1st album laughable scenster style over substance hyped NME rubbish, 2nd is a genuinely solid modern record produced by Geoff Barrow.

NME is toss, I weep when I remember the quality of the mid to late 90's magazine I grew up on (which was no doubt rubbished by those who read it in the 80's / 70's at the time).

As I understand it's not far off becoming web only, judging by it's current circulation.

I do love Drowned in Sound, I like to think it doesn't have a particular type of music it champions as such, but I think that's more down to every article being written by people on the community boards. But it certainly sticks to the fringes more often than not rather than stuff that gets alot of airplay. But then that's certainly not a bad thing as it's pointed me in the direction of some love stuff.

DiS is quite a good little site but sometimes far too "indier than thou". Some of the people that post on there are so pretentious about their music it's untrue and every week there's a new debate on which National album is the best and how Frightened Rabbit should be the biggest band in the world. Far too much insistence on listening to Last FM for my liking. It's as if music is only good if Last has recommended it!
