Obviously there is no way to be completely secure from some banker 'cough' sorry....w*nker half inching your valuables but at the end of each festival they announce that there have been less and less incidents of crime over the weekend that year, so it's getting better every time.

The safest place I know to camp is in the Dragon field at the top of the site, despite it being next to the stone circle there are security personnel in towers who can pretty much see across the whole of that camp site...alternatively there's always the Kids camping. :D

Simple thing to do is not keep anything of value in your tent. If someone did go into your tent they're not going to steal yesterdays sweaty socks and a few bags of crisps if thats all that is there. Only thing we might have that people could nick is a cd player but I'd keep it well concealed. Just make friends with the people around you, they'll watch your stuff and you'd do the same for them. I've been going to festivals for years and never had a single thing nicked. In a way I hope someone does try to one year and I catch them, cos they wouldn't be stealing from anyone, or doing much else for the rest of the weekend.

It's so not as bad as it used to be... I remember in 1999 I got woken up on 2 nights by people trying to rob my tent, hasn't happened since though, and the plus side of that massive fence, I'm afraid to say, is that it keeps out a lot of the trouble makers. If you have valuables and are worried about thefts there's security lock-ups in most of the camping fields. And in the highly unlikely event of you losing your tent... well there's a Millets on site and I hear that the Hare Krishnas let the tentless sleep in their tent, and if you're friendly enough you may even find a nice person who will let you crash in theirs!

Someone came into me and my ex girlfriends tent in 2002 while we were asleep and stole her handbag. We were devestated. We were camped in the dragon field.

I have been in a campervan since then though so luckily have a bit more security.

Im certain it is so much better now though. Glastonbury seems to be getting a more plesant place to be every year.

last year i saw a few slashed tents.

the best thing to do is once you've pitched your tent, empty the contents of your rucksack and arrange them in the biggest mess possible. burglars don't want to spent ages faffing about looking for something of value amongst your junk.

keep everything you WOULD mind losing on you at all times (for me this will include contact lenses...can't see a bloody thing without them)! i always split my money into 2 wallets as well, even though i keep them in the same bag.

it's rare, but crime happens at glasto as it does in real life. keep your wits about you, enjoy the cider and have a fooking great glastonbury :D

In my festival career of about 30, i have only every had one thing stolen and that was my sleeping bag. We are usually in groups of 4-10 and out of all that, one person was robbed in his tent at knife point, they were never going to stab him or anything just wanted him to stay still while they went through his pockets. They also agreed to his request to leave his wallet cards and phone and just have the cash. This was at Glasto in 98 when the conditions were really bad and there was a lot of crime compaired with todays festivals.

Dont take things you would hate to loose, and dont worry to much, festivals are much safer these days.

On the flip side of this, last year a guy came over to our camp whilst we were sat having brekkie and asked if we'd lost a camera... My friend checked and it was hers, it had fallen out her bag on the way home the night before... So for all those horrible ones that shouldn't be at Glastonbury there's some good un's too!!! I think the fact the ticket thing is so much more secure now means the people going aren't just opportunists but genuine festival folk x

I have come back a few times to find my tent open but nothing has been nicked (or that i have noticed anyway). I generally unload all my stuff onto the tent floor so that even if some pikey-tw@ wanted to take something, he wouldnt be able to carry it all.

Moral of the story, full bags are easy pickings so keep it messy and confuse the bastards.

My mate had his tent slashed in 2005 and the stole some paracetemol. The stupid thing was they actually took the packets out of the box but left the box... Idiots.

I was quite lucky actually. My tent was in the middle of 2 of my friends. They went through the other 2 tents but left mine and mine was the only one that had valuables in it- Weed, Camera, Ipod.

It's so true, dont take what you cant afford to lose.

Unfortunatley i was travelling at the time and didn't live in the UK like i do now so had to take everything with me... Just lucky they didnt go through mine.

Just pretend that they WILL go through it, and you will keep everything safe.

The fact Glastonbury sold out so quickly in years gone by and with the fence going up always seemed to make it less prone to scum coming on site robbing stuff....

That changed last year when tickets didnt sell well and it gave scope for the scum to get tickets easily and come on the rob... Tickets havent exactly gone flying off the shelf this year and I am expecting a similar problem...

Someone slashed are tent last year but woke us up and got nothing...

Best tip is to sleep with valuables in your pockets... Wallet, camera etc...

All things said, its still miles better at Glasto for this stuff than somewhere like V Festival...

The lock-ups are the place to put anything you don't want to lose. I never keep more than about £20 on me overnight, other money will be in whichever bag we put in the lock-up and go back to every morning.

Thieves will be looking for cash, expensive phones and mp3 players - all easily pocketed and valuable.

If you get someone doing the "sorry, wrong tent" at night but don't fancy a half-asleep brawl, just TALKING LOUDLY / SHOUTING about it usually wakes up enough in your area for the thief to go elsewhere.

Following them back to their non-existant tent can be funny, expect them to realise it's the wrong field very quickly :D

Additional: They will mostly be about on Wednesday and Thursday night when people are likely to have more cash on them.
