Tent pole problem

Essentially one of my porch tent poles are completely split in 2

I bought a replacement, arrived, tried to repair it today, doesn't fit (even though it was sold as a replacement for my tent)

now the likelihood is i won't get the correct replacement in time for glasto especially as i leave early

would a simple [insert preferred tape] patch up last me the festival at least?

any experience and or help appreciated because it's last minute it has thrown me :(

sorry ye should have been more specific

it is a fiberglass one, 6.9 mm

the replacement i've found is a mm more, would sanding the tip be a feasible option or would it weaken the pole too much?

I had this happen with one of the poles from my Eurohike dome about 10 years ago. I wrapped the pole up very tightly in aluminium tape and it's been fine ever since, I've used it in all kinds of weather and conditions and I reckon it's probably now the strongest pole in my tent (except when my friend Aleksander visits - he's one strong Pole!)

A pretty good stronger repair can be done by inserting wire (eg the grade used for coathangers) into the inner part of the poles where your making your join.I've found that this makes a strong flexible join before you wrap join with duct tape.

It works!!!

You can buy pole repair kits at most camping shops.

They consist of some replacement poles (make sure you get the right diameter), a length of the stretchy elastic that runs through the poles and a 'threader' stick - like a long fine knitting needle with a hook on the end.

Pull out the end of the elastic from one end of the pole length and untie the knot.

You can then slide off the pole sections till you get to the broken one. and remove it.

Then rethread all the poles using the replacement section for your broken bit. If it's a bit over length you may have to cut it to length with a hacksaw,

Tie the knot back in the end and... it's all fixed.

I got though after a fest and replace all the broken sections.

I keep any broken sections that might still be useable (for example if only the last couple of inches are split) and hacksaw off the broken bit. You can then use those in future years. You may be able to make up a replacement by putting together the remains of two shorted 'broken' lengths.

Alternatively, you can go into a lot of camp shops and they will do it for you for a small charge - though once you've don it yourself you'll discover it's quite easy.

Failing that, gaffer tape.
