Tragedy Strikes - Injured Myself

Ok, so basically, i went out ther other night and over-danced a bit, my knee was a little sore afterwards, no real problem there, but yesterday i was helping my mate move house. i bent down to pick up a particularly heavy box and it just, well, cracked. According to the nurse, i've probably torn a ligament in my knee and it hurts so much.

I quote myself somewhere off this forum - "i'm the kind of person who will probably spend a lot of time dancing around the market and eventually the glade".

i'm pretty much immobilised now and i can;t see it healing much before the festival. i am absolutely gutted. all i want to do is get messed up and have a party but i really don;t want to make it any worse so the whole drink/dance/f**k the pain away argument is probably not the order of the day.

of course i still want to go, i'm just really fed up.

does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing happening? what did you do? how can i still get the best out of the festival?

cheers guys

Depends on what damage you have done Sammy. I had my knee go the wrong direction to my ankle a couple of years ago and was due to go to Vegas 10 days later. I basically ruptured my Anteria Cruciate Ligament but after 7 days of it being swollen, I was able to limp about OK and the Vegas strip is a pretty long street I can tell you..

Give it till over the weekend to see how it feels but all is not lost yet...

Good luck...

I ruptured my ACL ligament in 1999. I was away at a conference and was referred to a doctor who said it was a sprain and gave me no rehab or physio at all. Needless to say the knee was very weak and would fold the wrong way about once a year (i do karate). In 2006 I was referred for physio, was diagnosed properly with MRI and was operated on in November 2007. The knee has been top notch ever since, a new lease of life, I couldn't be happier.

If its diagnosed as a complete rupture you'll 100% need surgery as your knee will be completely buggered for life. If its just a small tear you may be OK just letting it heal and get some good physio. Get a proper diagnosis soon.

I know the pain you are going through and this close to Glasto is heartbreaking. You should be on crutches now, and will be for the next 4-5 weeks. As long as the pain is manageable you could feasibly make it to the festival on crutches. If its a total rupture you probably won't do any more damage, although your miniscus may get a bit worn if you try putting too much weight on it. If you can get about on crutches, and can handle the pain, you could do it without making it worse. Carrying your own stuff is a total no-no at this point though. If you do decide to go, bring a camping chair for visiting stages.

Bottom line is to organise some physio once the swelling has gone down. And find out if its a tear or a total rupture. A total rupture will need reconstruction - 6 weeks off work and 6 month physio programme.

If you can get crutches, mates to carry your stuff, and a chair, you should be able to do the festival as long as the pain is manageable.

I really really wish you the best of luck!

wow, thanks for all the replies. yeah, i have a mild tear of the anterior cruciate ligament. it doesn;t feel mild though and i'ma bit of a runner/dancer so i don't want to make it worse, even if that means taking it a bit easier.

obviously, i'd like to avoid surgery, i hadn;t even really thought of that. i'll do everything i can for it in the next week and maybe it'll be ok, i'll keep you posted afetr your kind advice. its really appreciated.

i had something similar at reading fest a couple of years ago, i basically did the same injury, but in a mosh pit and in both knees in one go. i got carried back to my tent that night by two randoms and i was in an absolute state. when i got up the next morning i literally coouldn;t move without being in agony and i drank that pain away completely and was ready to mosh again by sunday. but the moral of the story is that turned out to be a really bad idea and i regretted it for months.

on the other hand, i don;t want to ruin the festival. probably try and balance it at glasto. find a few other ways to have fun.

thanks guys

This thread is truly horrible, major sympathies to all past and present sufferers! :P

TOUCHING WOOD BIG TIME, I've been so so lucky in all my years of Glastogoing. Feeling fit as a fiddle at the moment .... sorry.

Sammy, hope the crutches help better than you expect, and that things won't be as bad as you fear. At least we're likely to be dry!

I know I will rip something in my leg this coming week. Managed to start on it at the Orbital show last week...packing the ibuprofen and hoping I will still be able to hobble a bit for the Prodge! Which is actually the moment when I will do it tbh! :P

A friend of mine has the mumps, how she got it we'll never know as she had the jabs and everything.

Apparently she'll not be contagious after Saturday and will be back at work on Monday so it looks like she's gotten away with it.

A couple of years ago another friend had a kidney infection and couldn't drink for the first couple of days. She still had a great time.

Just go, enjoy yourself.

My brother did a similar thing on our trampoline, but I think it was involving his tendons as well so it took months to heal. He couldn't really do much, but a very tight leg brace helped a lot so get one of them.

Just bring a load of ultra strong painkillers and you will be fine. (but do some research into which ones you can mix with alcohol first)

On the plus side you can get other people to carry most f your stuff :P.

If you are going to glasto then don;t be afriad of telling the doctors specialist... it's usually best to say "im going to be doing this, this and thins, regardless... how can i minimise any further damage" rather than telling them your goign to take it easy and not doing so.

I've done a muddy one on crutches before, having totally smashed my ankle in a Jack Daniels driven, hand spring over a wall moment of madness. Obviously it can be hard going at times but I still had a great time and it is now a little personal badge of honour! I also like to get out for a run and it helps a shedload if you're in reasonable shape! Enjoy, come what may.

i was wanting to go out running a bit this week just to test my fitness for 5 days of (honest to god) absolute madman dancing. i guess this would probably be a bad idea now? i should really go to the doctor i guess. i've only seen a nurse and she hasn't really told me what to do.

edit: just went for a walk, i defo need to get some crutches asap.
