I was there on the day Jamiroquai headlined, they were supporting their greatest hits album, so the set reflected that, it was a blast. Kaiser Chiefs subbed for them, I was not too familiar with them at the time, but became a big fan because of this show. And this was when Sziget still had a Jazz tent, caught a late nite set there with Rhoda Scott. It was a great day, and Aron Aszok was the beer then, .6 for 300 HUF and it was ice cold. Did not make the Iron Maiden show here, caught them at Sziget 2 years later.
I was on the island last year, for my first time in over a decade. There is still loads of fun, and a lot of variety. The Global Stage was a blast. I just think that the trend toward more pop and EDM has taken away some of the spark, maybe even soul, something you can only get at a live music event. I can see how amazing that Anyma experience might be, but for me I would go see that in an IMAX, not at a festival....
Sziget should book for what kids want today and not what legacy people like me think, so that is all well and good. Charli and Chappell, while pop, are massive and deliver the goods. Let's hope there's more live acts yet to be announced, things could still be great.
