Pennards Hill of Doom.

I camped in Pennards with my girlfriend and a couple of mates and we all found it to be a great site. We were parallel to the entrance to the Park and just a bit up hill from 'Camp Rowdy' (who were a bunch of idiotic teen boys but were also just having harmless fun from what i saw/heard) but had lovely immediate neighbours and would definitely camp back there next time.

I think 'Hill of Doom' is a bit of an exaggeration and it's more just about the lottery of who you find yourself next too. I'm sure everyone on here would agree that the BNP aren't welcome at any Glasto campsite.

Ok - just googled Glastonbury+BNP and found this result near the top http://davestrickson.blogspot.com/2009/06/...y-for-anti.html

I was watching The Specials and heard nothing but a massive cheers for the anti BNP message, but a comment down the page reckoned there was a group of about 25 there who booed.

Maybe it was the same bunch?

i seen that camp , it was half way down penards hill with massive 'this is england flags' tied to the lamp posts and the whole thing was surrounded with england flags , i laughed at it because there were so many flags , on a plus note ,i think they were told to take the big ' this is england ' flags down because they werent up all weekend

I don't supppose too many people would pick up on it but I saw quite a few Soviet Union flags, a North Korean flag and Vietnamese flags, all of which represent repressive and totalitarian (and xenophobic/racist in the case of North Korea) societies. Not quite as obvious as a BNP presence but they don't exactly bode well with the Glastonbury ethos.

I think that to a certain extent it's just the luck of the draw. I was camped in Park Home last year and found myself next to a complete bunch of loud mouthed knobs. They managed to space out their tents in such a way to take up as much space as possible with a large centre area, and abused anyone who even innocently walked into it. Top that off with playing music and shouting until 5am and then abusing people who were just talking normally in their tents at 9 or 10, and it wasn't a great experience to be near them.

You can wind up next to anti-social people almost anywhere. I was in Dairy Ground this year and thankfully had great neighbours, but wouldn't have been too surprised if I hadn't.

My coach took 9 hours to arrive from London so by the time I got there, Pennards were overstuffed and I could not find the efestivals group, so I got stuck by the John Peel tent, which was too far from everything but the exit. Took an hour and half to get there from Trash City on Saturday night.

Interesting feedback on this post... the BNP guys were most certainly not just skinheads sadly, I love you guys! Their 'site' was cordoned off with England flags and a big central England flag took pride of place, not really my thing but I was prepared to just accept they might be very proud of their heritage until I saw one of them drunkenly waving a mini BNP flag and voicing some fairly disturbing views... but then again considering this country has allowed them seats in this year's elections perhaps this is the future? Scary.

I walked past their camp on the last day and the flags were all trampled and the litter left was horrific.. very sad.

Anyway, I know that neighbours are luck of the draw at Glasto but I just felt the overall atmosphere of Pennards this year was a bit wrong and not what I used to love about it. I adored The Park this year and next year I think I might go for Park Home, it was damn near empty weds am this year and a wander through The Park to my tent doesn't seem to much of a chore ;-)

I camped in Park Home, right opposite the entrance to the Park. Lovely neighbours apart from the lads who kept chanting "get your tits out for the lads". They were about 12 and so public school it was bred into their faces, and they never actually said anything when people weren't in their tents. Aww, bless.

I didn't see the BNP camp, but one small camp in 200,000 odd people really isn't a large percentage. Whatever I think of their politics, they're as allowed to go to Glastonbury as anyone else, even if I find their views abhorrent.

I was saddened by the lack of St George's crosses at one of the most English of festivals, given the huge amount of flags representing totalitarian regimes, Che Guevara t-shirts and other showings of support for oppressive organisations and governments.

i ended up in dairy and it was rather nice, if a bit of a trek due to the lack of an aforementioned path directly along the back of the site rather than down and around the park. i'll be going back there again. our neighbours were cheery and just what you'd expect. no total @rseholes.

can i just put an appeal in for news of our neighbours? there was a casualty who scurried offsite on sunday morning with paranoia ripping through him after a night out with my mate. john, if you're out there, are you ok?! you DIDN'T do anything wrong you know, and no-one hated you. :O

I couldn't find when I arrived, so I camped in a random spot on pennards (as it turned out not that far from triangle)

My neighbours were brilliant! Even helped me pack away my pop up tent on the Monday (only for some booger to nick it on the bus!)

Think I'll go back to Kidney Mead next year though, pennards is just too long a walk from the car parks, and being camped somewhere else doesn't stop me from popping down to see people at triangle or wherever.

Funny thing was, on the Wednesday night I got back ot my tent a bit worse for wear and found it no bother, Thursday morning I head out for a bacon sandwich and a trip to the bogs, came back and couldn't find it! When I did find it, my neighbours reckoned they'd seen a blonde girl going in and out of it. I'd be so lucky :O Turned out it was mine!

good to see the BNP w*nkers are are stupid as ever. They seem to think that Gerry Dammers was playing with The Specials - i'd guess they reserve special hatred for him. :O

Really, you need to brush up on things a bit. There's many different types of oppression, with western individualism being far more murderous than some - in fact probably all - of the regimes of the 'totalitarian' flags etc mentioned in this thread. :O
