Glastonbury to start Tuesday in 2010?

Absolutely!

It took us 4 hours to get from just outside Shepton Mallet to the festival! Literally 1 mile an hour! It was fine... cranked up the stereo, there were folks playing footy and juggling etc on the A37, we bought some bacon butties and scrumpy from a house in Shepton... no worries!

We drove through Oakhill (about 2 miles North of Shepton) I guess at 11.15am ish... just as I uttered the immortal words... its great coming this way, there are never any queues! Doh.

We got to the carpark at 3.30pm.

Shit happens , and its not just Glasto, we were camped up in V Stafford the other year , and a

friend rang to say they were still on the M1 stuck at Sheffield , took em 12 hours.

y'know what? It wasn't really a problem. We were all in the same boat, everyone was excited, none of us were at work... we just started the festival on the A37!

If it rains next year (2007 style - i.e. all the f**king time), there will be a lot of very depressed, very tired people on site by Sunday.

Tuesday until Monday is simply too long to spend at Glastonbury.

You can have too much of a good thing. Limiting who can and cannot arrive a day earlier is asking for trouble. Then there's an extra day of littering to think about - it's bad enough now.

A big huge fat NO to Tuesday for me. Keep it how it is, if it leaves us wanting more by the Monday, and us counting down the days until the following year withing hours of getting home, the festival must be doing something right.

There are many things the festival could change for the better, but the amount of time it's open for is spot on and should be left alone IMHO.

sorry LW, but this kind of comment is done loads on here and it's defined has

If i don't think it's right then it should - not happen and be banned,

Glasto (for me!!) is about expanding your mind, doing something different. Try and spend a few glasto's never going near a main stage if your worried about litter

You're dead right - I spend 75% of my time away from the main stages where there's a lot less litter. But littering isn't the issue in this thread.

My point is Tuesday will simply become just like Wednesday is now. When I first started going, most people came on the Thursday and there was still LOADS of room.

What next? Start coming on the Monday?

5 days (Wednesday til Sunday) is MORE than enough time. You can have too much of a good thing. Right now, I still have that 'I don't want to go home' feeling on the last day more often than not. But if it's wet (a la 2007) then I was pretty fed up by Sunday afternoon. Add another day onto that. No thanks.

I don't like the idea of banning ANYTHING (including flags) and suggesting cars be banned if the site opens on the Tuesday is just the same thing. The festival should be open to all for the duration.

There are plenty of things to (constructively) criticise Glastonbury for, but the time it opens the gates certainly isn't one of them.

Leave it as it is. If people want more, then maybe take a few days camping in Cornwall pre-festival?

if Tuesday becomes the norm, i'd be campaining for Monday! then Sunday...

you can't get too much glasto spirit, although i did see a few unconcious people who seemed to have gone ott

Another day means more money and more time off work, thats an economic fact, 35-40-50-60 quid, what ever you choose to spend, I struggled to get by this year like many others. If you're comfortably off, or bank rolled by benevolent parents then good luck to you, just remember those who are not and have to think about the costs of next years festival from the day the last one ends.

  • 1 month later...

I dunno if they want the hassle of re-negotiating the licence.... but I'd love Tues-Tues. That would be superb.

I think it could work to charge a bit more to arrive early if they need to.... I don't think it would be cruel or unfair or anything like that... there'd still be plenty of decent spots the next day. Just gives the most keen a chance to enjoy an extra day to get into the atmosphere.

And leaving on Tues would allow for a nice proper chilled night on the Monday. Most would still leave on Monday, so it would be an excellent way to relax after the madness!

stupid idea that'll solve nothing, all that'll happen is the site will fill up early tuesday instead of early wednesday. People will have to take more time off work, it'll cost a hell of a lot more for a ticket and if it rains heavily early on it'll be agony for 6 days of walking through glue-like mud (imagine 2007 lasting another day, im not sure my legs could've coped).

The only solution is to not have any entertainment whatsoever on until friday, that way people have no reason to come early unless they really want to and i imagine that'll be fewer than come now coz everything is open and bands are playing from wednesday onwards. Mite keep the ticket price down too that, it cant keep going up about £20 a year
