I was expressing my pride in humanity for being able to cleverly organise ourselves in such a way as to have the site entirely cleared in 11 days.

.......it's about us, humanity as a whole, clearing it up. I contributed to the task with my £175, others contributed with physical labour.

..............Well done us. Group hug?! :D

I don't know how many times it has to be said that more of your £175 would have gone to charity if you cleaned up after yourself.

Unlike other festivals Glastonbury has a charitable ethos.

If you don't contribute to this ethos then that is your decision but you don't have any right to take any pride in contributing to anything and your continued attempts to do so are just a wind up surely? You have taken money from Water Aid, Oxfam & Greenpeace because of the additional costs incurred to the festival by your laziness.

There is obviously provision for people who don't realise how priviliged they are to be able to kick back and enjoy a load of bands and beer for 5 days, or to afford £175, and camping equipment to just throw away - but that doesn't make it right.

You're a grown up - none of this is difficult.

With regards Wateraid , the issue of people washing their wellies than stepping in the mud 5 seconds later is a bigger issue than littering with the amount of wasted water . How hypocritical is that ?

Anyhow, the site is cleared, the cows are safe, and butterflys can flutter happily over Pilton once more. Well done us. Group hug?! :D

For Example if we all did our bit, the site could have been cleared in say 6 days? Rudimentary maths, but if each litter picker earns about 50 quid a day... over 11 days, the 500 which have to be employed cost Glast approx 275k. If it took 6 days, it could cost 150k. Thus 125k to Wateraid or whichever charity. The cows and butterflies could return 5 days earlier...

I'm still astounded at your complete lack of environmental ethos in all of this.

To be honest, and this isn't really going to help my argument, I don't believe in environmentalism at all.

In fact, I believe that environmentalism will be seen in years to come as the ultimate manifestation of our (meaning human beings in the 'scientific age') arrogance.

But that is a tangent I'm sure nobody wants me to go down. I could go on for ages! :D

Earlier in this thread I asked for someone to give a rational argument for why they should litter, and this is the first hint of a possible reason, I guess you believe man shouldn't try to meddle and just let nature take it's course. So for example Oxfam and Wateraid save lives in the third world which , if things were left alone, would be lost to drought, famine, disease etc. This is natures way of dealing with overpopulation, so by denying these charities money we can leave nature to find a balanced population in these areas based on available food, water etc. Keeping people alive unnecessarily increases the world population and demand for scarce resources.

There - it's logical and rational but I bet it's not popular!

A lot of people have said that they were next to untidy people but everyone has basically said that there was no way that they were going to clean up other people's mess. This means that virtually everyone who has commented here is just one small step away from the selfishness of the abandoners themselves in my opinion.

Here's an idea, there is a rubbish problem at Glastonbury, take it upon yourself to spend ten minutes a day filling one black sack and one green sack with other people's rubbish. If just one in ten people did this then the site would be a whole lot cleaner right away. Let people know what you are doing and explain that you are doing it to differentiate yourself from the careless majority. I'm sure a significant minority would be persuaded to do the same themselves and the place would be significantly more pleasant. In a few unlikely situations, it might even make a few of the selfish people think for a moment about what they are doing.

This idea could be promoted via the program, posters, Worthy FM etc. and I'm sure it would make a difference.

You got that from "environmentalism will be seen in years to come as the ultimate manifestation of our arrogance"?! ..I thought he was talking about environmentalism? Darwin's 'Preservation of favored races in the struggle for life' was wrongly twisted by some - a rather nasty chap called Adolf Hitler did have a similar 'logical and rational' argument to the one above. Anyway - I do think some people are coming up with some rather far fetched arguments just to not bend down, pick up litter and put it in a bin...Pathetic

How so? Blaming the organisers who do provide many, many thousands of bins for not providing bins.

Put filled bags next to your nearest bins. Or even leave a pile of them in the field when you leave. Either works very well. The ground stays litter free for the duration of the festival, which many of us would prefer.

With all the 'it gets cleared up for us and I paid my £175' bullshit arguments can I just ask do you care that you live in a shitheap for 5 days instead of glorious green fields? No?

Do you care if any of the other 175,000 people you share those green fields with don't want to live in a shitheap for 5 days? No? I don't think you do. Now we're getting to the nub of it.
