Yeah josh homme didn't play at TITP either with EODM, though i guess if they did play the same day as the monkeys (who's new album was produced by homme) maybe we'd see him play with the eagles of death metal too? Which would be wonderful.

I have both their albums on my Ipod and saw some of their set in 2006. As far as I can tell they bring nothing to the table that seperates them from the likes of Razorlight and Franz Ferdinand who were also sorry excuses for headliners. They are the musical equivalent of Peter Kay comedy, throw in a few obvious observations and british pop culture references and morons think you're a genious. They don't sound any different from all the other bands who have been flooding the "indie" scene for the last 5 years. So no, they don't have crossover appeal, nor do they deserve any.

That was with QOTSA though, not with EODM wasn't it? The trouble with this is that it'll get me really excited cos I'm a huge fan of all the stuff Dave Grohl and Josh Homme have done, but most supergroups never seem to be as good as the groups all the people have come from :-(

I'm surprised by that and have to disagree. I think they're far above the likes of those two. They play better, are better lyrically, and simply have better songs. Their third album is also a good step in a different direction. That said, in among the avalanche of flotsam and jetsam from the indie landfill it may seem like minor differences, particularly if that type of music isn't your thing (generally speaking, rather than saying that anyone in particular 'just doesn't get it').

I'm a wee bit surprised by them headlining but I guess it's the only slot they could have filled based on past success. Their 3rd album is excellent, but I rather suspect may be the beginning of the end of their mass acceptance (and hopefully their pikey following-their crowd when I saw them at LCCC in 2007 was the worst I've ever been part of) (and I've seen Oasis) and the last time they headline.

That's quite possibly the most reasoned, unbiased and acceptable argument in their favour that I've read after months of "they're lyrical geniouses" and "they've sold loads therefore they're good". I'm more than willing to give the third album a chance, as I did with the other two. Though I feel ultimately, as you hinted at, they historically haven't done enough to distinguish themselves from the "chasing pack" for people who don't listen to much of the genre, I wouldn't expect a "landfill indie" fan to be able to notice the difference in quality with (eg) Machine Head, when compared to BFMV and Trivium. So I'm not sure why people expect everyone in the world to appreciate minor differences that make them better than bands with a similar style, because at the end of the day it's probably the style they don't like.

Personally I don't like the guys voice at all, the over emphasized accent irritates me, musically I can't tell the difference between them and a few of the other indie bands and lyrically I've seen no examples that meet the standard of "genious" that people band about. I would also argue, as I touched on earlier, that making a few brit-culture references and observations that appear to the common man doesn't constitute lyrical genious, or even any degree of wit or whimsy, it constitutes the musical equivalent of Peter Kay comedy, and judging by what you said it appeals to the same white van driving, Sun reading, pikey scum who's presence at this years fest concerns me.

(If any of that doesn't make sense it's because I wrote it in stages, also not 100% pleased with all of it but can't be arsed to edit)

Fact is if they play they'll get a huge crowd, alot of which will be people not caring what they sound like but just because of who's in the band. Ther'll also be alot of people like myself who might go see them to see what they're like and ifd they work well togewther as a band. Either way it would be a huge risk just sticking them on anywhere apart from perhaps a secret slot on the Main Stage or announcing them in a high up slot on the NME.

Even if it's a secret, word will get round soon enough and I doubt the organisers will want to risk anybody's safety.

Regardless if they were to play at the festival...there are so many options for who does what, as to my knowledge:

Dave Grohl - Singer, Guitarist, Bassist, Drummer

Josh Homme - Singer, Guitarist, Bassist, Keyboardist and Drummer

John Paul Jones - Bassist, Guitarist, Keyboardist and Mandolin

But with those three people there...they could only get a headline spot, as Grohl has headlined the festival before, Homme has played second a couple times i think and Jones has headlined before also...

So i think its unlikely for them to fit on at all.
