I don't see how Johnny Marr can not be recognised as a great guitarist. He is universally accepted as one of the best British guitarists of all time, creating a new style of playing when every other guitarist at the time were either playing three chord punk or metal. He created countless genius melodies, to say he is a crap guitarist suggests that you know nothing about the process of making music.

I think The Cribs are due a lot of credit regardless of whether they are liked musically or not. I remember the first time I saw them live, they filled a near 3000 capacity venue after two albums, neither making the charts and after very little coverage on the TV and the radio. It takes real buzz about a live act to get that sort of attention.

I dont think this is the thread for petty arguments as all I want to know is whether they are bloody playing or not!

I got up to the johnny marr argument then got bored.

The cribs are alot better than most of the "indie" bands out there, esepcially their live show.

The smiths are one of the most overrated bands of all time.

Johnny Marr can play the guitar realtively well.. but there is no evidence of him being a great. not by any stretch of the imagination. Especially in a thread where Lee Ranaldo is mentioned.

personal opinion surely?

Edit: that didnt really answer the question. Here goes.

I think its as simple as wether i think it sounds good or not. Sure, if there are 2 guitarists whom i think play the guitar just as nicely, then the originality etc comes into it, but whatever johnny marr did, however original etc etc, i never listened to the smiths and thought "hes a good guitarist, that sounds good"

To me though evidence is objective while personal opinion is subjective. So I dont really agree with your viewpoint. I dont like metal and none of the guitrists massively impress me. Im not sure it therfore follows that there is no evidence there has ever been a great metal guitarist. I just think they are talented but not my thing.

Just had a scan through this thread, and here's my tuppenceworth.

I'll go and see the bands who i like. Some people will deliberately go and see 'fashionable' bands. Some people will avoid 'fashionable' bands. Some people like some bands. Some people don't like some bands.

I'll just leave everyone to it when i'm at the festival. Because i don't give a shit what anyone's motivation is for watching any of the acts they see as long as they don't spoil anyone else's fun.
