Camping help for a newbie...

Hi all

As two 40-somethings, we are coming to EotR as our first proper festival this year and pretty excited! Have a concern over arrival/set-up etc which someone might advise us on - unlikely to be there till about 6 on the Friday (annoyingly) and very keen to see The Duke And The King and The Mummers, so wonder how the camping areas are likely to be around that time? If we go straight in and watch those two will we lose any chance of a decent camping spot, or can we relax and leave the tent pitching till a bit later in the knowledge that there's loads of space? Which areas fill up first?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Hi There,

I would say that you should not worry about losing a "decent camping spot"...I do not know exactly what you need but there is always a lot of space in the camping areas at EotR...there is no tent-hurdling escapades like at Glasto etc. I would say go see the bands you want to see first as the worse that could happen is you may have to camp slightly back from the main thoroughfare...which can be a good thing anyway...seeing as the toilets are situated along this route!

If the camping areas are the same as last year then you shouldn't have a problem and if it was me I would go see the music you want to see first.

Totally agree, oodles of space and even the furthest bits of the campsite aren't far.

It will be dark when the mummers finish mind - so be prepared for that.

There's an information point by the campsite. You might be able to leave your tent there, go see The Duke and the King - then pitch your tent - then see The Mummers - then get the rest of your stuff.

No problem at all with space

There's half an hour between the two sets you've mentioned, and they're both in the big top which is not far at all from the camping area. May be worth trying to at least get the outer shell of your tent up in that time, and do the rest later :D

Bring good lanterns just in case.

It really is the loveliest, friendliest festival, so you've chosen the perfect one for your first proper one

No problem with camping space but I'd be tempted to throw the tents up (only takes 5 mins for a small tent) and hurl your stuff in as you'll otherwise have to carry your things with you which might piss you off and the campsite is max five mins from the stages so you won't miss too much if you do it between sets or something. I had to pitch up a new tent in the dark a couple of weeks ago. We're quite pro at it these days but it wasn't a great start to the festival. Plus it might be raining.

  • 2 weeks later...

Many thinks to everyone who has been so helpful and gone so far to solving my problem (apart from JaniceSeptember obviously :D ). Sadly the final piece of the jigsaw is the Mummers cancelling so all pressure is off - we shall pitch and then explore* instead of rushing.

(*'explore' here is synonymous with 'run to the beer tent'...)
