t8yman
Got tickets to see Jerry Sadowitz in Novemeber, never even seen his act, but he appears to be widely regarded as brilliant, anyone? Yeah, he's brilliant. Have some heckles prepared, he'll put you in your place faster than he can say c**t! Tell him he's not as funny as Michael Barrymore or something. holy shit did I get that one wrong. I could have sworn I had heard comedians I respect speaking of JS in high regard, but after suffering the first 40 minutes before finally walking out (something I have NEVER done at a comedy show) I am actually stunned. the man is not funny, he spouted racist bile and shouted and screamed his way through 40 minutes of the most unfunny material I have heard since the bad old days of jim davidson and stan boardman. I actually felt dirty sitting there watching him. his material consisted of various "routines" about rape and paedophilia, which whilst unquestionably "edgy" simply aren't funny, the rest of his act was basically him calling jack whitehall, michael mcintyre, ricky gervais and other comedians c**ts. I can agree with his appraisal of MM, but otherwise he was utter, utter shite. The "joke" that was the final straw for me wiped whatever semblance of an awkward embarrassed smile off my face quicker than I have ever experienced. fuck me. I think he had his day in the 90's when I used to see him on tv. Say him at the fringe the other year and like you I was none impressed. I just think I have matured in what I find offensive and funny. I used to like Chubby Brown in the 80's and he is still doing the same old tired shit 30 years down the road. Purple Monkey
Jerry Sadowitz does 'audience participation' (i.e. singles people out and rips them to bits in the name of cheap laughs) right? I'd rather stick my dick in blender.

I'd rather stick my dick in blender. no, not really. I've seen him have a go at hecklers before though but they are fair game. The hate in his routine is mostly directed at himself (he's a scottish Jew, so what do you expect...). You either get it or you dont. I understand why most people dont like him. He hates everything and everyone. He doesnt single out 1 race or 1 religion. Everything and everyone is fair game, and, crucially, he loathes himself more than anything else. It's short sighted to decare him a racist or sexist or whatever. Edited November 23, 2011 by russycarps
t8yman
It's short sighted to decare him a racist or sexist or whatever. couldnt disagree more. On Monday night, he was talking about how much commitment and hard work it takes to be a paedophile (edgy eh?) and talked about how hard it was to dismember children and get rid of the bodies (still no problem here, other than it not being particularly funny) and how the smell from the bodies got so bad, he considered moving a pakistani family in to cover up the smell. that doesnt make him rasict? He hates you and wants to upset you. That's why he says offensive things, to upset people like you. He'd be pleased to see he's succeeded. It's really not just about hating pakistanis or whatever. Like I say, not everyones cup of tea, but he's not in the KKK or whatever (he hates them too no doubt). I think he's funny, and find his outlook refreshing. I sort of agree with him about a lot of stuff, I hate most people too. Not because of the colour of their skin, or their sex or anything. Just because most people are fucking idiots. The Nal
found this article earlier today. I agree with every word: http://thequietus.co...rvais-mong-face " a bit of a boor, and a creep, and a bully, and an oaf" Hes completely obsessed with his celebrity. Hes on Twitter all the time loving the praise. And the new show is extremely dull and predictable, apart from the Liam Neeson bit which had me in tears. Ed209
That was an interesting blog. Agree with quite a lot of that. Watched the "life's too short" episodes. Its OK, its very much a Gervais comedy though. Nothing new in there at all. Just feels like a new series of extras - which had its moments, but never really floored me. I still love him because of The Office though. I must have watched each episode about 20 times and it just gets funnier everytime I watch it. Probably my favourite comdey series of all time. The more time goes on though, the more it becomes apparent, he was a one trick pony - and in the end his greatest success, was also his downfall. On his own, billy no-mates, dressed right down, not making any fuss. Sounds like they're chalk and cheese.

Yeah Gervais is constantly whining about how he cant go down the pub as "idiots" keep coming up and talking to him etc. He was shown up though in that Gervais, Chris Rock, Seinfeld, Louis CK round the table type interview they did a while back. Did you see that? Very obvious that hes not respected in the stand up world anyway, not in any kind of serious manner. And rightly so, hes stand up is very weak. I agree with every word: http://thequietus.co...rvais-mong-face " a bit of a boor, and a creep, and a bully, and an oaf" After reading that I thought I would give the series a look. Terrible just terrible and I am a fan of Depp. Never understood why people found Idiot funny. Just the adverts alone irritated me. When you see him laugh it is so contrived. Purple Monkey
Still don't understand the hate for Gervais. I still think he's funny, as is Merchant and Pilkington. I have never met him, so I am reluctant to judge his real-life character when it's so clear he's always playing some sort of persona. t8yman
I still like him, his laugh on idiot isnt forced, contrived or put on - he genuinely finds pilkington hilarious. i didnt really rate extras nor do i really like the new one, but I do still find gervais entertaining, and he is a very intelligent bloke. the mong thing was ill advised, but otherwise, I'm on his side. the fact that people refuse to condemn sadowitz for what he said on monday stuns me. Kowalski
I like Gervais and I'll never understand the hate for him. I genuinely love The Office, Extras (particularly the second series) and the podcasts and agree his laugh isn't put on or contrived. The banter on the podcasts is superb. I do think Merchant is perhaps the brains behind the two though, and his performance in Extras was comedy gold. That said, Life's too short is extremely disappointing, and I'm not a fan of Gervais' stand up either. Idiot Abroad 2 has been a bit poor compared to the first. Some of it is boarding on cruelty rather than playing to Karl's idiocy. And as for Sadowitz, it sounds like straight forward racism to me t8yman. I'll admit I've seen Jim Davidson many years ago and he never said anything anywhere near as bad as that.
russycarps
I think Merchant is the weakest of the 3. I've seen him be interviewed a few times recently promoting his stand up tour and I find him desperately unfunny. I do like karl pilkington a lot though. Second series of Idiot was slightly more staged (especially the phonecalls from gervais - that is always the weakest part) than the first but I was still in tears at loads of it. I do know a few people that despise that program though. Saw one episode of Life Short and didnt bother again. The Office was sensational. It was pretty dusty in my house during that last episode. Wondrous TV. Sadowitz is an acquired taste. It's short sited to just brand him a racist though (especially if you've never seen his show). Someone who hates everyone, ultimately hates no-one. Rufus Gwertigan
Frankie Boyle... http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2011/nov/26/frankie-boyle-interview seems to be under the impression that it's only oxbridge middle class toffs who don't 'get' him.... so... dumb as well as not funny "you can't treat people like idiots" .. that's quite funny To be fair it did not say that. He said if he was Oxbridge he would get a different reception.
