For those who have Sky Atlantic.

Talking Funny

Tonight. 10:15pm on Sky Atlantic

70 mins.

New. In an unscripted special, legendary comics Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais and Louis CK find out what it really means to be funny. Very strong language and adult humour.

:D

why is Jerry Seinfeld regarded so highly? I can't stand the smug git...

do you know who I am??

 Clearly taking the piss obv.

In fairness, he was part of the biggest TV show of all time (I think). Depending on the year thats in it, he earns $100 million from syndication of the show! :O

Nothing compared to what Larry David gets though, 1.7 billion, yes, 1.8 BILLION, from the syndication of Seinfeld. All he does is sit there and allow people show it/sell it. Madness.

This was very funny......

I can't wait for this. I love all four of them, Gervais being my all time favourite.

I've seen some of it ... Gervais is totally out of his league here. Watch Chris Rock's face whilst Gervais is trying to keep up with being as funny as them, you can tell he's thinking 'who the f**k is this guy?'.

Well he's not because they are all great friends.

He's trying so hard! Although he is a sort of chairperson though. Louis CK is the man. A master craftsman.

Really?? Great friends??

I particularly loved the moment where Gervais went for the high five and had to pull back cos no-one was going for it. Obviously, this was all Gervais' idea (being exec producer) but to sit there with 3 of the (possibly) greatest living standup comedians and discuss their craft, whilst not actually being a standup comedian irks me a little. THAT laugh is all he's f**king got in this, and even thats as scripted as the jokes.

Stick to writing, Gervais, you're way out of our league here.

ETA:

Someone did a screencap of the 'Gervais High-Five Hang':

Oh! I'm sorry! If nobody gave him a high five, they can't be great friends. They seriously are great friends. Have you not seen Louis CK and Ricky Gervais on a flight, and they are having a laugh. It's on YouTube somewhere. I'm a huge fan of Gervais and I love all his work, including his 4 hilarious sell out tours.

Hes a bit up himself for such an very average stand up.

I love the Office and Extras though.

It's all an act. He just pretends to love himself. When you hear him in a lot of interviews he is actually a really different person. I love his stand up but I can see why a lot don't. Comedy is all about empathy, if you don't like somebody's personality then you rarely laugh at their jokes.

I like his personality, and Im fully aware its an act. But outside of that act hes still up himself.

I just find his stand up very weak, both in material and delivery.

The Office however, was total genius obviously, so was some of Extras. Although he ripped loads off Larry David for that. Even down to how some shots were filmed. If you ever look at the catholic prayer meeting in Extras vs the Incest Survivors meeting in Curb Your Enthusiasm for example, he almost ripped it off shot for shot.

The idea for the show is very similar too, semi fictional version of celebs etc.

The Ricky Gervais podcasts and early XFM shows are amazing, so funny, brilliant banter between the three of them, but as with Matt Morgan to Russell Brand, you get the sense that Steve is the genuine talent behind the writing of the Office (goes without saying, brilliant) and Extras (could never really get into it)

Gervais' stand up and film roles always seem to fall short, but I think his public persona is very far removed from his private one, which I think comes out more on the earlier radio shows, he's brilliant.

Louis C.K is easily, without argument, the greatest living stand up comedian though.

Ricky Gervais ruins The Ricky Gervais Show. I know it's allvery unbelieveable but his laugh is so incredibly fake and irrattating. I think that's why An Idiot Abroad was so good, much less Gervais, much more Pilkington.
