VCK
I remember last year a lot of people saying these were the three best performances of Reading and Leeds 2008. I was wondering if anyone thought any bands this year exceeded these performances. For me, personally, no. Regarding headliners, Radiohead put on a good show but it didn't come close to the sheer mindblowing abilities of Metallica and RATM. Prodigy and Kaiser Chiefs were excellent but their songs didn't tap into you like these three did, nor is their music what I'd call lifechanging. Ian Brown put on an admirable performance but didn't do much of a "classics" set (fair enough he only had 50 minutes but he was at a festival). Eagles Of Death Metal, another highlight, were good as always but they're a novelty band. As for the other two main stage headliners, Arctics and KOL. To even consider comparing their performances this year to RATM and Metallica last year =
thegremlin_1999
thats the entire reason i didnt go this year. I could see no-one (barring FNM maybe) topping RATM or Metallica. So i sold my early bird ticket so i could go watch metallica again at sonisphere...
scottt
I thought ratm were awful last year. Still, i think FNM came close to Metallica, but thats about it
inspectedinspector
Radiohead top them in my opinion, but they are my favourite band. I thought Metallica were amazing the first time I saw them, I'm not particularly a big fan, but at Reading they didn't really get me going, it was all too samey. Rage were good - I'd say on par with Faith No More I'll also add that I thought Qotsa, Prodigy and NIN were ace! All of the above were legendary sets Also that Bloc Party were the best this year than any other... hearing_aid
Manics performance last year was good, very good at best, I don't remember them getting such rave reviews on the boards last year, they use to be a million times better. It was a great set list but certainly wasn't a stand out performance. I don't think it has even been mentioned since just after last years festival till just now. Joshuwarr
Radiohead were soooo much better than RATM. Metallica had an unfair advantage of being f**king loud. The Cribs was a much better way of enjoying the Sunday night. Came out soooo happy and Metallica without stupid screen was just blinding and pointless. Bands shouldn't be about gimmicks. Crystal Castles and Gossip were amazing this year and are up there with my favourite festival shows ever
VCK
QOTSA were shocking last year.
pink_triangle
Its all down to taste. Kings of leon have been panned on the internet but of the healdiners I have seen over the last 2 years I would rank them first, followed by killers, ratm and arctic monkeys. Rage were far better the time before.
rexclark
I've got to say Them Crooked Vultures have to be up there and FNM would be pretty close as well.
rivalschools.price
on a personal level,i cant see 2008s line up ever being beaten.RATM,QOTSA,biffy, manics, alkaline trio, raconteurs, flogging molly, dropkicks, cage the elephant, metallica!!! jeeezzz, seems like they just put my ipod on shuffle and booked all the bands that came up. thomasowen
Radiohead beat them all but RATM are still probably top 3 in live acts I've seen.
Lithium05
FNM and TCV came closest. But none came close to the three mentioned.
MEGABOWL
I take it RATM at Reading and/or Leeds last year were better than the tragic 'fat middle aged men trying to be angry' tribute show that almost ruined TITP 2008 for me, given that I expected it to be a highlight. I've seen more genuine anger on Loose Women.

hearing_aid
I really don't think RATM was an amazing performance. It was f**king great but it was more the fact of the circumstances etc. The fact that people were actually getting too see them and those songs, they came out and did a great job but I don't think the performance would rank amongst their best. robsadler
rage against the machine at reading 2000 is still the best performance i have ever seen (strangely sigur ros and arcade fire are the closest to that performance!) pink_triangle
Agreed I dont think I have ever seen a reformed band who were better than before they split up. I think a lot is to do with the fact the main factor in a band (reforming) as mcuh as they may deny is money. I have no problem with that but I think it means you never get the same passion as before.

Messi30
Faith No More was better than all of them. If RATM volume had been same as Metallica would have been far better, bit of a let down really. Saw them with ADF supporting many years back, was one of best gigs I ever went to, and it was at wembley which is a pretty shitty venue in all honesty
