VCK
I read that The Darkness in 2003 and The Strokes in 2001 were both moved to high slots on the Main Stage after originally being placed in much lower slots. The Darkness played 4th from top just two months after releasing their debut album and The Strokes hadn't even released Is This It? when they played 5th! So I was wondering if the promoters would get away with something like this nowadays. If, let's say (thinking of acts that received a lot of coverage this year playing in the tents) The Gaslight Anthem, La Roux or White Lies were moved to 4th/5th on the Main Stage would there be a massive outcry? And speaking of which, was there a massive outcry when The Darkness and The Strokes got moved?
thomasowen
Well The Strokes were slightly different as they were a band that seemed to bring indie music back to life for a whole new audience therefore it was obvious they would be put highly on the bill to attract the new audience. If a band came along like that again (for example a metal band that would bring about a surge of popularity in that genre) then I think they would again be pushed to the top. Lithium05
Didn't The Darkness get moved up because either Jay Z or Courtney Love dropped out? Kind of like that abortion of a band MSI got bumped up due to the absence of Slipknot and A7X?
tomisnothere
I think Gaslight and White Lies will probably be main stage next time around, if not then headlining or sub-headlining a tent. Can't see La Roux on the main stage yet...
thetime
when the strokes got moved didnt the queen of the stone age get moved from the carling stage to cover the strokes.
thetime
What do you mean now a days, the only reason it didn't happen this years was because no one dropped out.
5co77ie
nobody dropped out the strokes were moved up. I think it was because of health and safety.
eFestivals
More recently (I'm not talking this year, it was the 2nd time they played), the Arctics got moved from headlining the R1 tent onto the Main Stage (was it to 2nd from top? I forget). I can't remember if they were announced for the tent or not, it might have been realised before they were announced that there'd be a real crowd issue if they played the tent. But they were defo booked to play the tent and not the main stage originally. (whoops, scottie(s) .... they didn't play the tent, unless you're thinking about the year before the one I'm talking about when they played in the 3rd tent and it was mobbed....?) rexclark
I can't really see it happen again, as has been said, the tents are better and it's easier to control crowds going in and out (at Leeds it was a one way system before TCV) I remember The Strokes were originally booked for the Carling stage in 01 but the hype around them was huge and they got moved to The main Stage, The Darkness as has been said were moved due to Jay Z pulling out late on, they were only moved up about 4 places but on a different day than originally booked. An act would have to come out of nowhere very quickly to have to be moved onto the Main Stage now I think.
remote
Was it Ash that also got moved from the Radio 1 tent to the main stage one year? Or have I totally imagined that.

eFestivals
They were officialy always going to play second, although they were apparently offered a headlining slot which they turned down. I didn't know they were originaly booked to headline the tent, but that would have been mad as in January that year they had the fastest selling debut of all time and surely they would have been booked after that rather than before?! The story as I heard it (I can't remember where from now, tho I remember believing it as kosher) was that they specifically asked to headline the tent and not play the main stage, and so that was where they were booked for. The story also said that they were quite resistant to being moved to the main stage, tho eventually accepted they couldn't play otherwise because of safety issues. I remember that people had posted that they would be playing the tent, and I posted that it just wouldn't happen like that because of safety issues (and had people telling me I was wrong and they'd defo play the tent ). I guess that says that some people at least thought the tent still possible. It's quite possible that they were booked almost immediately after their Carling tent performance, cos I'd guess that that tent had not had such a big crowd before, and I guess it wouldn't have gone un-noticed by Mean Fiddler. VCK
2005 was one of the best line-ups Leeds had ever had. What made it so strong was how the Main Stage was a good blend of old and new. Nowadays it's just new bands plus maybe a few bands in the top two and NME headline that had released their debut before 2000.
