Tristan
It's really funny that what you view this as is me taking a high minded stance. ... and if "respected publications" are "laughing at the type of music I like" (what is that by the way?) or anything for that matter, perhaps they're not as credible as they'd had you believe Besides. No way are Franz Ferdinand respected musicians, you might as well have said Scouting For Girls. I suspect you're trying to play me at my own game with outlandish suggestions like that. Lithium05
Emo used to mean something completely different too. I don't hear anyone whinging about bands being labelled as that. benissright
News just in, Festival Republic have announced that there will be no 2nd headliner on the Sunday next year at reading festival, as a mark of respect for Bloc Party. benissright
also want to add, having interviewed Scouting for Girls. They describe themselves as a pop act and just a group of mates who have known each other for years having a bit of fun. So they arent indie at all and nor do they want to be. jonnyisRFC
As i said a couple of posts ago, i went to a bloc party gig about a week ago and they said they have two more shows left on there tour but will be back and play plenty more shows in the future, so looks like there not breaking up just yet. scottt
did i say you did? i just think it's a really bad misleading label for a generic type of pop music
thomasowen
I think you did, yes. And im not saying its not misleading, but unfortunately, it is now what it means to the majority of people. And we do live in a democracy

scottt
Purely out of intrest (I'm not even saying I entirely disagree about them being an indie band) why would YOU class them as indie?
Im_in_a_tent
I actualy consider Bloc Party (first album mainly, not really a fan of anything after that bar a few songs) to be one of the more true "indie" bands out there. I think they deffinately have a more post-punk, sonic youth, kind of sound than all the other "indie" bands.
Lithium05
How about "Nu-Indie" "Post Brit-pop" or my own creation "Ironica"* *refers to the irony of over-produced, mass marketed, mainstream shite being referred to as "Indie", when they're anything but independant.... Doubt it'll catch on though, what with so many ignorant people thinking that this type of band get to where they are purely on talent, and not gimmicky marketing techniques and Radio 1 telling the sheep (not saying all the fans are sheep, but it's closing in on the majority) what's cool. And don't try and say this isn't the case, because I've seen gig/festival crowd etiquette crumble over the last few years due to too many ignorant c*nts there to hear the hit singles, not giving a shit about anyone else around them. I very nearly had a fight with a guy at the O2 during Green Day when this massive bastard barged his way in and stood directly in front of these 2 small girls, and then refused to move when I pointed out that he was in their way, even though there were other spaces around. Shit like that really pisses me off.

benissright
But I'd like you to define what makes these bands indie, you say my definition of an indie band isn't relevant anymore so I'd like you (without just giving me a list of names) to give me the new definition. thomasowen
2. Modern soft guitar rock from non manufactured bands aiming to break into the mainstream. Focus heavily on the vocalist and lyrical quality with a simple beat and melody structure that is aimed to be accessible to audiences. thomasowen
If it was never a term to describe a sound of music why weren't the offspring an indie band? they did have the highest selling indie album of all time. i do think there are similarities with most indie bands somewhere. For the record, id never call MIA indie. Maybe indie was once purely record-label based, but i know 15 years or so ago, it certainly didnt mean that anymore. Aslong as i can remember, indie has always (rightly or wrongly) described a style of music. If enough people use a word in a certain way, it can change meaning, that is my opinion.
