Mardy
The Edge's comment last year about how they were wary of playing Glasto because of the 'Hippy thing'. And to be honest I just can't imagine Bono at Glastonbury either.
Wooderson
U2 don't "get" Glasto? They haven't played it yet.
george424
ah, right enough, didn't see that. My gut feeling is that if they're prepared to fly back just to do this, and accept a vastly reduced fee, and generally put themselves through a lot of inconvenience to play, they probably do get it. Dunno about the ego thing, as I said elsewhere, you can't be a frontman of a big band without it.
Bobser
When did Edge say they didnt get Glastonbury because of the hippy thing? I seriously doubt he said this. He certainly didn't say it in the interview with BBC after performing.
The Goo Goo Doll
Sunday Bloody Sunday - Certain/Extremely High New Year's day - Very High Where the Street's have no Name - Certain With or Without You - Certain Elevation - Very High judging from previous setlists and others' guesses. Desire - Very High I'd say. Bad - Looking to be probable, we can pray.
Bobser
Put it this way. They're flying from the States just to do this gig and then flying straight back after. They wrote a song called Glastonbury. They haven't played a festival in decades. I somehow think they actually do "get" Glastonbury.
Bobser
I don't think U2 are going to let us down with the setlist. They're fully aware they're not playing to their own crowd and I be surprised if they don't do a greatest hits including Bad, all I want is you and the usual tunes. I just wished they played Mofo. Id die a happy man seeing that performed in Glastonbury

Digi
I agree that they must realise the status of Glastonbury - hence they are flying from the USA etc, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they fit in with the etos etc of Glastonbury. Just that they want to join and become one of the Legends that have headlined the biggest festival in the world. Anyway, just different opinions really, I do hope it is amazing, and I think it has potential to be. What are the chances of them playing the abovementioned songs? george424
Have you got a link for this 'hippi' comment? The only comments from them have been very positive and Edge said he was blown away when he came...
MEGABOWL
I remember reading that last year, and thinking "what on earth does that mean"? ... the hippy thing'??? Edited April 10, 2011 by MEGABOWL
Bobser
Interesting. I'd love to know more about that and what is actual opinions were of Glastonbury. I suppose U2 had focused so much of their career on the States that they were probably unaware of Glastonbury for a long time. With regards to U2 not suiting the ethos of Glastonbury, Id disagree. Bono is all for charity, good causes etc., as is Glastonbury. I think they're a match made in Heaven.
The Nal
yea, I get that... but why is 'the hippy thing' perceived as a negative? Edited April 10, 2011 by The Nal
grumpyhack
It's all bullshit. They'll play their standard set with a few classics and some new stuff off whatever album they're promoting, just like most bands. They played Live Aid, which was a bit of a hippy thing, and Glasto ain't significantly different. If they've got any sense they'll also bring on BB which would go down a stormj. danbailey80
'By the time Glastonbury hit its stride we were doing our own thing. It didn’t seem right for us then. It feels like we really have to do it because if we don’t do it now, we never will. I’m obviously familiar with the festival’s ideal but I’ve never experienced it. I used to be sceptical of its roots, the hippy thing. I’m going along to check it out as much as anything but I have a good feeling about it. I’d like to hope we can make our mark.' Zilcho
yeah. U2 will do a great set. I probably won't watch it as I'm not a massive fan, but they will be an excellent headliner.
Digi
Get your head out of the mud baby!!! I'd also very much like 'Out of Control' in the setlist too which was the very first U2 song I ever heard being played on my older cousins turntable nearly 30 years ago April 10, 2011 at Sao Paulo, Brazil Venue: Morumbi Stadium Opening Act(s): Muse Main Set: Even Better Than the Real Thing, Out of Control, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Elevation, Until the End of the World, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Pride, North Star, Beautiful Day - Singing in the Rain, Miss Sarajevo, Zooropa, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I'll Go Crazy (remix), Sunday Bloody Sunday, Scarlet, Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone Encore(s): One, Amazing Grace - Where the Streets Have No Name, Ultraviolet, With or Without You, Moment of Surrender Comments: Out of Control is played for the first time since Dec. 4, 2006. Zooropa is played for the fourth time ever, and the first since Aug. 12, 1993. Moment of Surrender is dedicated to the victims of the recent school shooting in Rio de Janeiro; their names show on the screen as U2 performs the final song. With tonight's show, U2's 360 tour becomes the highest-grossing tour of all-time, surpassing the $558 million dollars that the Rolling Stones' 'A Bigger Bang' tour earned. The Nal
that's unbelievably narrow minded. Many religious people totally related to a lot of what some of the hippy ideals were/are flakey behaviour...? at it's beginnings, punk audiences weren't that different to hippy gigs... look at early shots of Pistols gigs and look at the audience. Punk was a very open minded 'event'... that was part of its appeal Edited April 11, 2011 by The Nal
The Nal
Interesting.... Still, I'd have thought he'd have understood it all a bit more by now.... every reason why they have to do Glastonbury! (not that it's the hippy fest that it used to be...) (I didn't think it was your take on it... )
