Musicals.

Well, I have got out of it. Followed Jump's suggestions and said that, although I really didn't mind going, I thought it would have been something that her and her friend would enjoy so much more than what I would.

Have agreed to see something else in the future though...it will be my choice too ;)

After reading the thread it seems and is obviously obvious that real men dont do musicals. Girls do (but actually only like the good ones).

Whether this means that you have a feminine side to you if you are a bloke and DO enjoy musicals...hmm, conclusion is...erm...dont want to really say it but Rufus' daughter might have a point.

At the end of the day a musical is just another theatre show that has songs thrown in to tell the story. There is a lot of decent theatre out there and it certainly would seem that turning a good play or story into something that the cast sing along to can and often buggers up the format (pardon the pun).

My best personal example of a play ruined by being turned into a musical is The Hobbit. I saw an absolutely stunning play version with full cast of Thorin and his dwarves, a 10 foot Smaug costume and a perfect Bilbo Baggins. I have never seen hide nor hair of this version since 1988! It has since been replaced by the musical version which is diabolical. Meaningless songs about long journeys, a rap by the goblins, a whining solo by Gollum and this is what really upset me, Gandalf dancing around like a 5 year old at a birthday party!!! I mean...come on!!!???

BUT one of the best musicals I have ever seen is a musical about gay men for gay men and girls that adore a good musical show...Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Bloody marvellous show, big costumes, a tribute to Kylie, wonderful dances...in some ways better than the film I have to say.

And to finish, a film that not even gay men watch (apparently), Dirty Dancing. Made into a 'musical' BUT in fact this isnt actually a proper musical. Its essentially the film on stage, set to the songs from the movie and sung by the supporting cast while the main cast do their acting of the story. Baby and Jonny dont warble one note. MOst of the men in the audience I was sat in were put upon boyfriends and husbands dragged along.

Also please dont forget that the majority of musicals that were written by Rodgers & Hammerstein and friends were produced in a far more innocent age, a time when gay meant happy with no homosexual connotations. The films were bright and people went to watch to lift themselves for a few hours out of the dark lives they were living. Andrew Lloyd Webber on the other hand...please have a field day folks! ;)

Unfortunately, a lot of more modern musicals really are just pointless and a way of getting money out of silly people. Spiderman the Musical??? Set to run for 5 years just to claw back the $50 million invested...riiiiiiight!

Ive been to a fair few particularily over the last 18 months. I usually end up in the mindset that Im not really going to enjoy myself but I have always had a great time.

The stage productions on Broadway always leave me stunned - the sheer amount of work that goes on off the stage is phenomenal. How these people do it twice a day for months on end I will never know!

indeed...

not really musicals as such, but I took my mum to see Liza Minelli and Shirly Maclaine at the Palladium in the 70's, and they were both fantastic. Liza did massive chunks of Cabaret, and Shirley did bits from a few of her films, mainly Sweet Charity (and she was very funny too). When I say I took my mum, I wanted to go too....

I've heard the same, everyone I know including the most cynical bastard I've ever met said it's great.

I'm off to see Jersey Boys soon and the only musical I want to see but can't as it's in America is the Book Of Mormon created by the guys that did South Park & Team America. I was hoping it would take off and get a run in West End but doubt a musical about a small American only religion would sell well over here.

I hate musicals with a passion. My dad is into his Am-Dram and I was forced to watch him in pretty much every musical that existed when I was a kid. My pet hate is Fiddler On The Roof which I must have been forced to watch live at least 3 times. Pure tedium and quite depressing.

Don't get me started on Annie or the Sound of Music.

However I was talking about this in the pub the other day and someone mentioned that O Brother Where Art Thou won an Oscar for best musical. I refused to accept that film is a musical. Its just a film with some songs in it.

South Park is the only good musical ever made.
