As much as I love Rage and hate the X Factor, I think this campaign misses the point entirely. The christmas number one is no more about serious rock than it is soppy ballads about winning a talent competition. Christmas number one's should be cheesy, great fun and about sleigh bells and santa claus. The Jeff Buckley campagin last year was justified because it was a protest against a beautiful song being exploited by Simon Cowell but Journey would probably love their cover to get to number one.

We've not had a real christmas number one in years, if anything I will be buying the Rolf Harris and Status Quo single.

I'd love to see Journey beat X factor and wipe the smug look of Simon Cowell's face.

But I also have to agree with that Christmas number 1 should be a cheesy Christmas song, the last year we had any dercent ones was in 03 with Proper Chrimbo and The Darkness.

Hey, I was just thinking about this.

If this campeign suceeds in getting rage to xmas number 1, could this be the catalyst for heavy music to make a comeback?

I for one would love it to get to number one just to see if it had any knock on effect at getting rid of all the manufactured rubbish that dominates music these days.

So many good bands out there that Ive been to see in the last few years more deserving of their efforts being heard than the majority of music these days.

I think the whole thing's stupid anyway. Just a bunch of fairweather "fans" who don't even care about the charts jumping on a bandwagon. They claim to "THINK SONY'S A BUNCH OF, LIKE, NAZI DICKS, MAAANNN!!!!111" but fail to realise that both artists are signed to Sony.

I joined the group because I thought it was a joke and I'm a massive fan of Rage but when I started seeing Skins wannabes on my Facebook join it, who were still listening to the chart shite they're supposedly "raging against" when I first became a fan. I'm actually quite saddened to see a band I love so much be lost to a group of people who buy into the lifestyle Rage are against, but at least this kind of thing will never happen to the Manics, Pixies, Stone Roses or Smashing Pumpkins.

I really don't care who gets to number one. Getting Rage into the top ten isn't what the whole point of Rage is (although Tom Morello has approved of it, but presumably because he's flattered by the support...if only he'd realise the insincerity of it) and I think their ability to write great songs is much more of a crowning achievement than becoming a mainstream vehicle.

It's not about Rage though, it could have been any band really. I don't even think it's an attack on chart music, just X Factors domination of the christmas number one. I myself haven't downloaded and don't intend to, I think the whole thing is a bit misguided - but I would love it to be number one and would welcome any egg on Mr Cowell's face.

Yeah but who cares about the Top 40 these days besides children, housewives and old women?

I think it's a bit retarded to buy a song just because it will stop another song on the same label getting to number one. To use an analogy, it's like saying "I hate Big Macs so I'm going to buy a Big Tasty in protest! Yeah, that'll show them!" They'll be lining MacDonald's pockets either way.

If these poseurs love RATM so much like they claim to do why didn't they start a campaign to get them to number one before? Why only now? Still, I can imagine the conversations in Topshop about how "Cowell's gonna get murked, maaaaytee!" In all honesty, I'd actually rather see Joe get to number one because at least the people buying his single are buying it because they like his music (for the record, I don't know why!) rather than just trying to look cool or stopping someone they don't even care about getting to number one.

Some people on here are so f**king up their own views it makes for banterful reading.

RATM have noticed all the hype and are doing a live performance on bbc radio 4 at 8 50 this morning.

Its at number one on itunes and is still the most bought single in hmv or something.

its probably going to be in the top 10 at least which will give it air time on christmas day.

i'll be listening

When we look back in a decade's time, and ask why an old rock song from the early 1990s went to No 1 in 2009, sticking out in a long line of overblown ballads like the proverbial sore middle finger … to me, that's what the pop charts were made for.

taken from the guardian today.

Wow talk about you lot missing the point.

Its purely an attack on x factor making the christmas number 1 so dull and inevitable.

Not sony. Who cares what label a band is signed to?

Not necessarily x factor. Many of us choose this as a guilty pleasure.

Purely and utterly, our christmas number 1 has for the last x amount of years either been x factor, or dull charity single. I miss the days of crap music making it to the number 1 spot and the debates about who could get there.

If RATM get to number 2, i dont care, because at least in the week to the chart announcement we have had something to talk about! Rather than ignoring the chart altogether.

Incidentally, RATM, according to figures released today, are winning by 60,000 votes. So basically they've sold an equal amount in the day that Joes single got released. I think RATM are favourites to be number 1, and that to me, is a christmas miracle.
