I think so. I need to get back over to Austria to brush up on my German skills. It's been a long time.

Anyhow, point being, it's shedloads easier to immerse yourself in the culture of a country and learn it rather than do it from a far with a text book.

So we've agreed that carpet muncher is an offensive term in the context it was used, we have agreed that immigrants should have no language demands placed on them befoe they arrive and elsewhere LW agrees with me over the World Cuip at Glasto next year.

Hard not to be smug sometimes :P:P

Id agree up to a point. However, when attitudes become so reinforced by the casual use of language, then intent becomes a cloudy issue. Let's assume oaf had no malicious intent in his words. Now let's assume one of the gay members of the boards happened to be passing through, saw the discussion topic and wanted to offer an opinion. Do you think that a bunch of heterosexual males bandying about the phrase carpet muncher as a referent for lesbian invites them to comment or excludes?

That's down to personality. If there was a topic full of English people making jokes about Scottish, I might not feel invited to comment. Times on here I haven't commented on certain issues because of this (and it doesn't help when the owner has his particular view/bias/whatever).

It doesn't mean it's wrong and I can accept it's just banter.

So as a feminist, you are happy to dismiss language that excludes women because they are women and lesbians because they are lesbians. Like your socialist claims you have no claim to feminism because you clearly have absolutely no idea what it means.

But I'll tell you what, next time you're at a labour party meetring, make a reference to lesbians as carpet munchers - see how many of your colleagues agtree. Try it out with the LGBT club at university.

It's a joke on the stereotype of Wales being dull and boring. I call Scotland shit as well. I don't realy think that at all though, do I?

Are you taking offence to it?

Oh, and I don't recognise Wales as a country. Neither do I recognise Scotland as one either.

Nor am I. But you are suggesting that it shouldn't offend anyone because it is just banter,

Anne Widdicombe had a choice in this matter. Which lesbians had a choice in being referred to as a carpet muncher?

You know pogo I really cant be arsed arguing with you. When I said earlier that people agreed with me, I should have said the intelligent people agreed with me - Feral Chile, Dr Billy, Strudders. You put yourself in the same camp as oaf if you like.

But I dare you to print this thread off and take it into university or even to a labour party meeting and see what people think of your feminist and socialist credentials. I know that if you took this into university and tried to justify your position to a feminist, they would laugh in your face.
