I've been thinking about this idea of whether people new to the UK should learn English, and I think they should be given every opportunity.

Otherwise there's the possibility of exploitation. If they rely on someone who speaks better English than them, to deal with their affairs, there are certain situations when they could find themselves getting ripped off, or having difficulty in finding stable employment, housing etc.

Surely it's in their own interests to be able to deal fully with their own affairs, and to be aware of what's happening to them.

The first time we went to the boozer after moving to Der Farterland, the wife went to the bar and ordered a beer for me and a 'dry white wine' for herself. As she approached the table with the drinks, she looked perplexed and confused as she placed down in front of me, one beer and three glasses of white wine for herself! :P

Our entry requirements are also more than speaking English, that's not the point. The point is that I think requiring "integration" is morally wrong.

I'm no expert on this but as far as I know Australia hasn't got the best record on human rights when it comes to immigration, sending a boatload of refugees away to starve springs to mind.

If you're asking me whether a country has a sovereign right to hoard wealth and resources and prevent other less fortunate individuals from accessingthem, well that's quite different.

Sorry, it was this bit of your post I was trying to answer (or at least avoid answering), the rest you seemed to have answered yourself.

I'd like to move to Australia as well, but in my case it's the misses that's stopping us. I've not really looked into it but was under the impression there was some sort of points system based on your age and skills. I'd also heard they've got a shortage of young men there due to them all leaving the country (presumably to work as barmen) and it was getting easier to get in, but that may well be bollocks.

Its my long term plan too ... Its not difficult to 'get in', providing you are skilled. Its the economy that makes it madness to even consider it ... the exchange rate is ridiculously low. You wont get as much bang for your buck as you would've a coupla years ago. Australia have upped the entry number this year to 120,000 (I think), so it would appear that the doors have opened a little, even if the criteria hasn't changed.

You have to speak Aborigine (sp) to get into Australia these days? :P

I wouldn't put up Australia as shining example of imigration policy, by the way. These are the same people who set the gun-boats on rafts-loads of asylum seekers after they've made their way across hundreds of miles of open ocean, before rounding them all up and keeping them in concentration camps in the middle of nowhere.
