Your favourite Glasto images

Thanks. I only recently acquired a DSLR and I'm looking forward to capturing some nice images this time around.

Any advice on what lenses to take? I use a Nikon D5100 - i have the kit lense and a 50mm 1.8G.

I was thinking of taking the 50mm and buying the 35mm 1.8 and taking that.

Difficult to say. If you have the 50mm 1.8 then you've got a good standard lens. You might want to take something wider than the 35mm in that case. Also, if you're interested in shooting acts on the bigger stages then you'd also want one with a longer reach. I tend to use a couple fo zoom lenses, 24-70 and 70-200 a lot. I also use a faster 50mm fixed length lens at night walking around. I like the wide end of the 24-70 so I'd recommend something around 20mm or 24mm as a wide lens. Of course budget comes into these decisions...

These guys pretty much sum up what's great about Glastonbury for me. They can't make much money, if any. but they show up and entertain people. And people love it!

And finally, this was my view while Eels were playing on the Other stage on Sunday afternoon. Lets face it, none of the band are much to look at, so I spent an hour looking at the white flags fluttering against a clear blue sky while they played. Bliss!

It was a great set. I went there to watch some flags fluttering but ended up taking some photos of the band instead.

I'd say, if you are a pro or enthusiast shooter, and you have a decent DSLR or film SLR, and you are not predisposed towards being completely out of your gourd 24/7, then it's definitely worth bringing it - if you can be arsed. It is extra work to lug around but you'll have a blast with it.

These are from 2010:

Obviously most nights it is preferable to put it away in the lockups once the sun goes down, so that you can go see the big bands, get naughty in the naughty corner etc.

But last time in 2010 I took a light travel tripod with me and set aside one night (the Saturday in this case) where I wandered the site at night and really enjoyed taking some long-exposure shots around the site.

Just my plug.

For information I think all of these were taken with a Canon 40D and 24-105mm L lens. I may well be bringing the 7D this year. I will save room by leaving out my 17-40mm L wide angle lens as I barely used it last time. I have a "pocket" camera - a Lumix LX7 - which takes RAW and will act as my wide-angle should I so need. Still debating whether or not to pack the long 70-200mm L lens but it's a heavy bastard...

Thanks guys. It's not too difficult to do these.

Just set any decent camera up on a tripod, try to keep it out of the wind, fix your ISO to a low number (max 200-400) and set it to Aperture Priority according to which bits you want to keep in focus - f/8 is not a bad bet at night - and your camera will automatically pick a rather long shutter speed. Of course you can play with these even more to get a longer exposure - sometimes I set mine down to 100 ISO and f/16 if I want a proper old long exposure e.g. the Chinese Lantern shot.

Now being arsed to look after your DSLR and a travel tripod when you should really have a pint of cider in your hand / bouncing around in some random tent / pick your poison - now that's the difficult part.

If you want to see how a proper professional covers Glasto at night then go no further than the venerable Tabasco Kid AKA Leon Neal of AFP.

I love this one I do like the glastonbury pictures, where the utterly brilliant/out of place thing just looks like an everyday occurrence (Cos it is at Glasto )

Exactly what I love about that area, just sitting watching all these acts wonder by (When not muddy, which it won't this year )

Had to clear the photos with the lads in it but this is basically our entire album from 2011. Some nice pictures I think... some I'd do a lot better now as I've learned a lot in two years. I'd recommend doing the fullscreen and F11.
