Pogues Mcgogues
There is no such thing as building up credit. Credit ratings are largely a myth; you don't have a universal credit rating that every bank and credit card provider has access to and only gives you a product if you get a certain 'score'. In fact, paying off your credit card in a timely fashion and never missing a payment, although it might endear you to a mortgage provider, can lead you to being rejected for any other credit cards. Companies sell you financial products based on their potential profit, not any sort of 'risk' arrived at by looking at a credit score. Not that I'm implying banks would intentionally sell a mortgage to someone who couldn't pay it off, and thus incur heavy penalties ( ), but an awful lot of applications are rejected simply due to the fact that the applicants are too poor to be considered for the product in the first place, not because they haven't got any 'credit'. Or simply, they cock up on the application form If you've never defaulted on a loan, been pulled up in front of a court, or committed fraud, there's no point in getting a credit card to falsely inflate your credit score. If your salary isn't high enough, it doesn't matter how many times you've paid off your credit card on time.
MrZigster
BBC Breakfast describing Bryan Adams as "a rock legend", when they have Ray Davis on the same show and give him a pretty "meh" intro by comparison. Who is the Rock Legend out of these two, really?

RABun
After some years i am finally debt free and although i have credit accounts, i.e. phone, credit card, overdraft etc, i pay them all off every month. My credit score is still low because i have one default on my file which has since been settled. Unfortunately it stays on your file for 6 years and you can't get it off without going through som fairly time consuming processes. Which means i can't get a mortgage or a loan for anything which is why i got the credit card so i can use that and pay it off every month its only got a £300 limit. Which does help to build up my score again so at some point in the future i might be able to buy my own home. Though that looks unlikely unless i bump off my family for the deposit. rachbon
i've never had an overdraft, credit card, loan or any sort of debt. i buy things with my own money. if i want something expensive, i save up for it. if i can't afford it, i don't buy it. i get offered a credit card every time i'm in the bank and it does my head in. dakyras
That's largely more or less untrue. I can get you the place for you to check your credit rating by the end of the day if you'd like? There IS one place that every bank can check yours in the UK, and a lot of companies too (mobile phone providers for example). It's what's used to determine your eligibility for a motrgage. If you want to go and check several banks for quotes, you'll have to leave yourself several months. Everytime you check it your credit rating goes downwards as well, before recovering, so don't check it a few times in the one month.

jump
I'm always using my credit card as it offers you more protection than a debit card/paypal but I do have the mindset of if I don't have the money for it don't buy it.
RABun
No, there isn't. There are credit agencies such as Experian or Equifax who collate your data on behalf of banks. The banks themselves then make up their own 'score' based on that data. You credit 'rating' doesn't go down for getting a quote. Don't be daft. Pogues Mcgogues
Pizzas amazing dipped in ketchup! And the credit score thing is definatily true. I don't work in mortgages, but a lot of the training overlaps, and we have had some info on that area. Even the basic info gives this as a way of designing your mortgage ammount the bank will lend you.
