Do you mean http://www.oz-bus.com/?

I would love love love to do that - or something similar (they've added a London - New York via Russia/Asia route since I last looked on there which massively appeals), but I'm not sure... Its fecking expensive, seems a little touristy/scheduled, and I'd worry about being stuck with a group I didn't really get on with for 3 months!

Aagh itchy feet...

go to south america!! i was there for 3 months in the summer, and was only just long enough, could have easily stayed longer. the only preperation we did (group of 3 of us but could easily do it on your own meeting and travling with people along the way) was book flights into buenos aires and out of lima. we just traveled on other peoples recommendations and went down to patagonia, across to rio (busses all the way - our longest bus was 48 hours non stop!), then bolivia (amazon rainforest, climbed huayna potosi mountain to 6,088m, salt flats, potosi mines, la paz....) then into peru (cusco - 4 day white water rafting!, lima, mancora - surf!) a bit of ecuador and then traveled back down to fly out of peru!

would def do the same sort of thing again... we met some people who had been in guatemala and panema (centeral america) and then sailed to columbia - taking about a week stopping at desert islands - and ecuador, looked fantastic, and cheaper than you'd imagine, so i want to do that for my next trip!

i'd say do it all yourself when you get there rather than booking a tour of a country where your schedule is completetly planned out, you need the freedom to change plans and travel with the people you meet along the way!

I'd say Central America is a vastly overlooked travelling destination. South America has become far too touristy. CA is between the touristyness of Mexico and SA. I spent a month in Honduras working for a newspaper in my gap year, then spent another month travelling further south and I couldn't recommend Central America any more than South America. CA is definitely better.

anyone know any good cheap places to stay in new york?

was looking at appartments which seem cheapest for a week but still pretty pricey on your own when they add cleaning bills. one place quoted $445 dollars for cleaning!

looking at lower manhattan or north-west brooklyn area. and wanting to avoid hostels as i don't want to be sharing with 7 smellies.

Only ever stayed in hostels in New York. They can be pretty pricey for what you get but hostels in big cities in the states tend to be a bit overpriced. I know you said you didn.t want a hostel, but out of the few i've stayed in this was probably the best

Chelsea Hostel

It is quite big but I've always met pretty cool people there, nice outdoor courtyard, easy to get to. Some of the staff can be a bit surly but it is New York. Just treat it as part of the experience! Its also in a very safe part of manhatten (althoug pretty much everywhere in manhattan is safe now)

Maybe a private room? Don't have to go in a dorm.

The stewardesses only really come around a couple of times with booze. First when you take off and you get the ickle pack of pretzels and then more alcohol comes with the meal when it is served. Any time after that you have to pester them.

But hanging out in the galley areas is good, you get to chat to folk and stretch your legs and can keep pestering the staff for more drinkies if thats what you want to get up to.
