What are the rules on camping in both NZ and Italy? Depending on how skint we are, it may be our only option and obviously if we're skint, we don't want to have to pay for a site!!!

If we hire/buy a campervan in NZ, where are we allowed to sleep over night in it??

I will do this research myself of course just wondered if anyone knew :P

Most places in NZ you can just pull up by the side of the road and camp anywhere. Obviously being respectful of other people/property, getting rid of rubbish safely etc but i'm sure you'd do that anyway. There are a few places where you cant, Queenstown being one of them, and I think parts of the Coromandel. Not sure what any punishments are. Probably just moved on, pointed in the direction of a campground, but i think they can fine you. If you are in a place where you cant freedom camp, there are usually basic DOC (department of conservartion) campgrounds which will be nice and cheap. And quite often in stunning locations.

This one is just down the road from me

It's been nearly ten years since I went to Aus/NZ, definitely the best 9 months of my life. Thinking about going to SE Asia for three months or so, mebbe autumn next year. I should really look at what seasons to go...

Has anyone taken a long trip when a little bit older? How did you deal with taking time out of career/house etc? It was a lot easier to drop everything when there was nothing to drop!

A little bit older than your 'usual' backpacker types; I'm 28. Actual career that would need putting on hold, and too much stuff to just stick it in my parents house for 3 months.

I know its not insurmountable, I'm just not sure how (the idea is still in the v. early stages). When I did this last time, I got my A level results, finished work at Spar, bogged off round the world, came back, started my job at Spar again, bogged off to uni.

I see, well, im 26, I gave up my job almost 2 years ago, and have been travelling ever since. I was still living at home when I first went so was easy to leave my stuff there, I guess its harder the older you get but ive met plenty of people your age backpacking. Just think, if you dont do it, will you regret it in 10 years?

Yeah, I probably would regret it. I'm at a bit of a crossroads in life at the moment, so if I don't do it now-ish I don't know when I would. Possessions are only stuff, I'm sure once I distmantle things etc it'd be easy enough to put in storage.

Can I ask where you've been, what you've done etc? I assume you've worked along the way?

Also Dan I should add... if you and your partner both wanted to work in a city, finding 2 jobs wouldnt be a problem, ie sydney/melbourne/perth wouldnt be an issue as they are fairly big cities so loads of job oppurtunities. But if you both wanted to work in a holiday park in the middle of a national park in the middle of nowhere, it will obviously be a bit harder :)

Went travelling all round the world in 2003. Went to the "Full Moon Party" in Koh Pah Ngan Thailand twice. Its an amazing experience. Just a massive party for 10000 people on the beach loads of different bars all playing really loud house/dance music, and "Buckets of Joy" not to be missed. Hopefully going back in 2012 as no Glastonbury.

Also spent loads of time on Oz and NZ and they are lovely, especially NZ, but South America is amazing as well, especially if you can speak Spanish (which I can), went to Ushuaia at the bottom of Argentina, absolutely beautiful scenery and they even have an Irish pub serving Guiness!!

I want to live in a Californian ski resort in a couple years time. Then comes home in summer for the festies! But for that to happen I'm gonna need to save up a lot and rent a property over there.

@Chappie: Did you need a visa when you were in Oz and New Zealand? If so how did you go about getting it?

(I'm new to this stuff) :P
