pink_triangle
I agree with you on every point except since 2003 they released both Hypnotize and Mesmorize (in the UK the latter was a no.2 album, former no.11) and BYOB, arguably their second most well-known song behind Chop Suey. I'd still put them as second because they've never made the UK step-up to properly major success - a good point about Kaiser Chiefs - but then arguably neither did Pearl Jam nor Smashing Pumpkins and their worldwide success and (in their fields) legendary status carried that one. However, there's no question that they've done stuff since '03, and big stuff at that. Edited January 13, 2010 by pink_triangle
frankie boy
BYOB in my opinion is better known than chop suey I new BYOB along time before I ever came across SOAD. I think they could be a headliner that no one has rumoured or considered yet.
pink_triangle
Its played on kerrang radio a lot overnight. Of course they can headline. If the argument is people only know a couple of songs there isntr going to be many headliners. You can rule out soundgarden, tcv etc etc. It seems people want metallica, foos and the likes every year they know the songs of those bands. jordanuk90
I agree you can rule out those 2 bands, neither of them are popular to headline reading/leeds. I get the impression most of the people who say system of a down would headline are fans of their music and letting their personal opinions over estimate the size of the band. Consider last years headliners 1. KOL, Arctic monkeys, radiohead 2. Kaisers, bloc party, prodigy I just dont see how anyone can argue s.o.a.d fit in better with group 1 than 2. The headliners have sold ridiculous amounts of records in the uk and its why they headline mainstream festivals. The second headliners also all have had more commerical success in the uk than soad so I cant understand why system would be a place above them. This technical ability argument also doesnt hold up. There are technically good bands in the festival republic tent and people generally tend to think the bands that they like are technically better than those that they dont. I dont think people want the same headliners every year but I think bands have to reach a certain amount of commerical success to get the slot. pink_triangle
The darkness are another band whos record sales blow soad out of the water. People retrospectively say they were a bad choice because of what happened to them in following years but at their peak they were massive and a far bigger draw than soad, talent or no talent,. VCK
To be fair SOAD have released less albums than Pearl Jam or the Pumpkins. And of course Chop Suey is familiar with the Reading and Leeds crowd.

pink_triangle
I think you might to be under-estimating the size of the band tbh. I like S.O.A.D but I'm not a big enough fan to over estimate the size of them. They played second in 03 under metallica. (the same weekend blink played second under linkin park/ white stripes under blur). Coupled with the fact they haven't played over here for a while, due to the hiatus, there would be a lot of people wanting to see them If people are saying that blink 182 and mcr are contenders to headline, then S.O.A.D are more than able to headline. Blink and system's record in the uk for sales, album wise, is on par, blink have a few singles more. MCR have only had 3 records one of which was popular and 1 top ten single. So they are all on par with each other. The difference between the last few years headliners to this years headliners is there were a lot more bands around with headline credentials in previous years. This year a combination of Glasto being 40, big bands not touring and the rise of sonisphere coupled with the other festivals competing for the bands its more than likely that the size of the bands will be smaller in comparison to the previous years. Thus meaning that smaller sized i.e. second headliners may be bumped up to the hadlining level. They won't headline though because the headliners will all be booked by now and unless FR knew something we didn't (highly possible, lol) I dont think they will. Festivals are not solely built upon sales.
dacbo
system were utterly awesome in 2003 at reading. they kind of got a bit bloated and overblown, losing the specialness of the '03 performance when they headlined download in 2005 though. hopefully this will be a return to form. Budweiser
It's really not as well known as you think it is.
tomisnothere
I'm not really a big SOAD fan but I'm pretty sure Chop Suey is still a massive song in the "alternative" circles of people. I'd be willing to bet that most Reading/Leeds attendees would know it.
scottt
I guess if Slipknot wasnt able to headline, SOAD shouldnt be able to.

fatally_yours
System of a down have done nothing significant to move up the bill since their last slot. People will say they will move up because of the anticipation of them coming back, however there is no real history of this hapening to other bands at the festival. Sparticus
damn that's some straw clutching! I can see why he's said it, wants people to care about his solo work and not just go to his gigs and shout system. I don't rate the solo stuff though, and at leeds when he played i had to question what i was smoking when he started singing abba, luckily i wasn't the only one put through that lol.
