thomasowen
Not true, if you look at their sales and gigs they never have been that big. It's mainly hype. Edited January 19, 2010 by thomasowen
Kyelo
Neither were Joy Division in their day... The Libertines were a very influential band, a very important band and a band who were getting more and more popular. Their last album was a number one, and their last two singles got to number two and nine. Their albums have apeared on many best of the decade lists (number 2 on NME's which we know is influential on the festival) There have been books written about this band, and good ones as well - how many bands of the last 10 years can you say that about? So yeah it would be a lot of hype, but it would be down to merit as well.
thomasowen
None the less, their merit hasn't gotten them the sales that headliners usually have. Their hype from places like NME has ergo they have never been that big. The reason they will headline, if they do, will be because of the hype behind the reformation(is that a word? haha). Lithium05
A number one with their most recent album and a guarenteed number one should they make another one ( I would predict ) - that is a lot more in terms of recent sales than say Blink or Soundgarden. The reason I don't think it is all down to reform hype is because they probably would have headlined had they stayed together in 04 or 05 Edited January 20, 2010 by Lithium05
Budweiser
I imagine that if Chris Cornell or Tom Delonge were tabloid celebrities their bands would find number 1 albums easy to come by and all. Peter f*cking Andre had a number 1 album for f*cks sake, when it comes to someone in the public eye like Doherty a number 1 means f*ck all. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Libertines, but no way were they good enough to be considered headline material, such a booking would only be made due to their popularity with the trendy festival goers who saw a picture of Kate Moss at Glasto and see festivals as an oppertunity to show off their new designer wellies..... Kyelo
seriously talented band, Doherty was one of the most talented lyricists of the lat 20 years.
rexclark
That is subjective. However fact remains they have never been that large. If they had stayed together and turned out more material, they may be a mega selling act like the Artics and the likes but that never happened. Kyelo
IMO The Arctic Monkeys wouldn't be as big if The Libertines kept going, they filled the void left by The Libertines.
