thomasowen
I'd say the Pixies and Pumpkins, and possibly even Pearl Jam fit that criteria.
rexclark
The Cure have plenty of hits but I don't think they'd attract a massive crowd at R&L especially if up against a strong headliner on the NME stage.
judyblue110
I'm a big Pixies fan, but even I'm amazed at just how big they are. The majority of reformed bands these days get nothing but slack, especially if they haven't released anything new. The Pixies strangely seem to avoid (most of) that though, and I could easily see them headlining R&L.

rexclark
These days at R/L not attracting massive crowds appears to be an indicator that the band in question are brilliant.
stylishkids
It's amazing how far they're stock has fallen since they signed the then biggest deal in history at $80m. They've never been that huge in the USA, and they're only playing indoor shows over there these days. Only in Europe have they ever really been massive, playing big outdoor shows. However, they struggled on their last European tour, including moving the 60,000 Millenium Stadium gig into the Cardiff Arena. If they were invited to Reading/Leeds I don't think they'd be offered much more than 3rd down the bill now, enough bands around now with a greater status, and worthy of it too. thomasowen
What utter garbage this is. 3rd down on bill!!!! The same place where YYY's and Maximo Park play?? Reading/Leeds wouldn't dare offer them that billing it's just too desrepectful for a band of their calibre and size. Take them compared to last years headliners, I bet R.E.M. have sold more records than all 3 bands PUT TOGETHER and are known as a critically accliamed band too. FFS Rolling stone put Murmur the greatest album of the 80's and then you have Out Of Time and Automatic which you'll find on pratically all greatest album ever lists. Yet you think there are many more bands around now with a bigger status who FR could possibly book? And their US status means very little as the festivals is in the U.K. When Muse headlined Glasto in 04 there U.S status would have been pratically nothing but we all know that didn't matter and there are many other bands you can compare. And this Cardiff comparison is crap too. Anybody who knows anything about live music will know that Cardiff is generally a very difficult place to fill compared to others. Take Oasis' last tour for instance. They played 3 dates at Wembley stadium filling the place every night, but when it came to the one date at the Millenium Stadium they didn't even sell out their standing allocation. Thats why when Muse and Green Day announced their stadium shows this year they wouldn't have had a date there too, the organisers know this and will see it as a poor way to make money. There was nothing wrong with their Old trafford , Twickenham and Southampton dates and they all sold well. You must know jack shit if you think their status is as low as 3rd on bill. stylishkids
Didn't Rolling stone call London calling the best album of the 80s - even though it was released in 79?
thomasowen
Someone has just pointed out to me something coincidental on his MP3 Player.....He went down to R and there was Red Hot Chili Peppers. Dirctly above them were Rage against the machine. Directly above them were Radiohead. Directly above them? R.E.M! - there is all the proof you need

Lithium05
*Consults Ipod* Ok. So, if you assume there is some sort of alphabetical significance to the booking of bands, and if you rule out bands not yet/anymore at the level of headline, or booked elsewhere, you can predict the other bands headlining this year: 2008 > 2009 > 2010 Metallica > (Arctic) Monkeys > My Chemical Romance Killers > Kings of Leon > Kiss So there we have it. REM Kiss MCR

VCK
This could be the fourth year in a row where the Leeds Saturday headliner begins with an 'R'!
