Perhaps we should move it over here. As the other one is very dis-jointed.

Hey Jim,

Loving the line-up, just wondering if we can expect similar cautions to stop headliners clashing shown last year on the Sunday. I'm getting very worried about the possibility of Leftfield and 2manydj's clashing.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi Guys

I’m going to answer these in one go if thats ok and post them up in one post. Its takes forever to keep making individual posts and i thought this would be easier.

Thanks for taking the time to post up the questions.

Regards

Jim

Jim King Q & A

QUESTION FROM PAUL-

Agree with the Arcadia, as you know you have seen it in full effect at Glastonbury and the smaller rig at Bestival last year. These guys know what they are doing - are you allowing them to programme the stage too?

- we’ll do most of the programming of the DJS but Bert and Pip and really good guys and so we’ll be speaking to them about how best to work it. I’ve known Bert since he used to be one of the tent masters for Kayam.

One more thing sorry, regarding getting something of value for buying early without any line up etc..

Perhaps a reward of some kind, closer camping is fine on a huge site but Rockness is small so the walks are all minimal anyway.

What would tempt me to buy early would be an incentive such as a free programme, a couple of drink vouchers or even a CD of some sorts... am sure that would tempt a lot more people rather than a different bit of a field

- i like this idea. Too late for this year but we’ve already started to look at how we can bundle some ticket offers for early birds.

*And are Leftfield a UK exclusive or Scottish exclusive?

- Yes they are 

QUESTION FROM _RACHELBON-

why don't you provide some recycling bins at the festival?

- Hi rachel. The main reason is that recycle bins 9 times out of 10 get contaminated and so have to be re picked. We take the view that the sorting of rubbish at the MRF is the best way. This is where they tip all the rubbish and pick out the recyclables as it goes along a conveyor belt. From the festivals that we do we find this the most cost effective way to recycle. I’ll need to get the numbers but i’m sure we hit 55% last year which is far higher than your average local authority.

Maybe you could release the times before the festival so that people don't have to pay, then you can still sell the lanyards and programmes at the festival so people still have the option of buying one if they want.

- I want to put then on boards at the entrances to each of the arenas which will also allow changes to be made if people are late. The reason we cant release them in advance is our lovely illegal street traders take the set times and then set up camp on all the roads leading into the show selling the laminates as ‘genuine’. We think it best to find away to get the info out there at the show that doesn’t create a black market but gives out the info to those who need it without having to pay.

Why have you picked fatboy slim to headline for the third time in 5 years? Did you try to get another act but couldn't get them, or was fatboy your first choice? I can understand the same acts returning if they come back with a new set or if they are progressing up the line up, but to have him headlining again is a big disappointment.

- ¬we could have looked at some other acts but norman really wanted to come back and its been 2 years since he last played in Scotland so i didn’t think it was too soon based on the fact we have the strokes and leftfield as the other headliners. I take the point though.

- Also he’s always had the biggest crowds when he has played and so i think he brings something special and theres still loads of other new stuff going on.

Also, what tents will be open on the Friday night? Will it just be the main stage along with a few other things like the rizla bus, same as last year, or are you planning something different?

- We plan to do it the same as last year but there are 1 or 2 surprises for the Friday that we’re still working on.

QUESTION FROM THEDEMENTEDPOPPET-

Jim, if you are out there???

A couple of things:

Are the security guards still going to be told to confiscate food and unopened soft drinks?

- I take it you mean when they come into the arena from the campsite? Food shouldn’t be confiscated and we’ll deal with that in the security briefings. Drink is a hard one. The bars cost such a lot of money to run that you have to protect that business or the show will simply fail. The break even on this show is well really high and if you remove some of the restrictions like being able to bring drinks into the arena then the breakeven just goes higher. Its a big problem wherever you draw the line it becomes pretty contentious (understandably). I’m going to raise the issue of un opened soft drinks and water at the next management meeting though and report back. I should make the point though that i’ve been at shows and stood and seen people shout and scream that a coke bottle hasn’t been opened when it has and is basically full of vodka. I know this is where i become a bit unpopular but it becomes a minefield for security to keep any system in place if we have to check each bottle to see if its open or not.

-

Is there going to be any effort to monitor children (under 18's) getting into the site without adult supervision?

- This is probably the hardest thing we have to manage. The more difficult issue is sometimes a group of younger people being with a completely irresponsible adult. I don’t really want to make the show over 18s as i used to love going to shows when i was 16 and most people of that age are pretty clued up.

Ps Keep up the good work with signing up the acts, but I am always a bit impatient can you share with us when we should hear the next announcement

- More acts coming next week.

QUESTION FROM DISCOBADGER-

Jim would love to know is there anyone getting married again this year????

- there’s a few people who have put their request in but none confirmed yet.

QUESTION FROM MARTKAY1-

yo, I bought a front row camping ticket a couple of weeks ago, wondering if that allows access to the campsite on the Friday???? x

¬- yes it does.

QUESTION FROM GRANT TITP-

will you get the crookers back

- sorry, not this year.

QUESTION FROM STU150-

Why in the press releases are Club 75 being billed as "FIRST UK SHOW EVER" when they are playing Chibuku in Liverpool next month.... am I missing something?

- they never told us about it. We’ll have to re phrase it to first festival ever.

QUESTION FROM CHEMICAL_BEX -

Will there be more choice/a better choice of food this year?

Something a bit healthier?

- i will certainly take this up. We will have more vegetarian options as well.

How much coverage will BBC be doing this year as their website didn't really have much last year. Other than the 2008 Channel 4 Footage which still didn't show much, we're yet to get a good load of video footage to remind us of the fond memories haha. I think RockNess looks really special and sites such as 15000 people going mad to "Jump Around" in 2008 at the main stage need to be shown to the world!

Just out of interest, what is the usual method for booking acts to play at RockNess? Have some acts come to you? Have any acts agreed to play there based on recommendations from fellow musicians?

Out of the acts currently announced, will any of them be headlining the Clash tent?

Festie Follower

Will there be live radio 1 coverage?

- ¬no its not live but coming out in the week after the show.

Theampersanddevil

On that note, what’s the likelihood of a choice of vegetarian food? I don't want to live on and carry a lot of pre-packaged food.

Also what is the beer and wine that will be on sale? If I know in advance I can check if its vegi or not.

- They wont clash. Don’t worry.

Also, what’s the deal with Front Row Camping? Was planning on camping efest this year for something new, but it appears the majority have bought Front Row tickets. Since I am a Student Ambassador I was told I'd be getting a ticket to the festival so didn't think to buy one, it's only now I realise the major problem with them.

- Student ambassadors can go into FR camping.

With regards to the electro acts, will they be getting a similar set length as the likes of crookers last year?

- I haven’t finished the playing times but they’ll usually get 90 min sets.

Also -

What is the story with Leftfield regarding Paul Daley not playing? Was that known at time of booking, and if so why was it not announced as several comments from official sources referred to the 'duo' returning

- We had to announce our lineup on the day we had slated as it had to fit into radio 1’s schedule. Leftfield weren’t ready to make their announcement and so we couldn’t put it out ourselves. In an idea world they would have gone first but that would have put the rock ness announcement back another 2 weeks minimum which would have put it the same week as TITP so we would have had to wait another week. The issue with paul has been around for a while but they were still working it out as to how he would integrate with the project as a whole. In the end he’s decided not to play live. I was aware that this would be the case when we announced but felt that the plans they have for their live shows would not be affected. The plans they have for the vocalists are really exciting. Ultimately it wasn’t my place to make an announcement about them until they had done that themselves.

Rory _oh

Can the rockness website be updated regularly? The line-up etc... the IOW fest line-up page is a good idea because they’ve got spaces where acts are still to be announced and announced acts are put straight into there slot... just a suggestion

line ups looking great.

- It should be up to date now. There are more amendments to the website out end of this week as well to make it more user friendly. Still work in progress im afraid.

patience is a virtue!

To be fair this festival already has the best line up so far announced of any UK festival, just wait!

I dont think it would have been appropriate at this stage or even possible for Jim to confirm which act(s) are in the clash tent, hence why he didnt answer. Just wait to find out.

Regarding clashes, to be fair to festivals sometimes they actually need to engineer clashes so that one area doesnt get too overcrowded. Although the reassurance that 2many and leftfield wont clash is very nice. you cant expect everything you want to see not to clash, it just doesnt work like that, sadly.
