the point people are trying to make is that if everyone knew soundgarden(or FNM last year) were playing then the soundgarden fans would buy tickets to see them.the tickets were sold out before FNM were announced last year. FNM and soundgarden have huge fanbases

saying that,i cant see soundgarden headlining unfortunately.but they are an awesome band with some amazing albums.

I'm not doubting the size of Sondgarden but they would definately be better headlining Download or Sonisphere where the crowd is all there for "Rock" acts where as the R&L cfrowd is probably more leaned now towards "Indie" or "NME Crap".

Its ok looking at the past and comparing but the festival is changing. The festival has changed, maybe a few years ago when R/L was pulling in the rock punters soundgarden could have headlined but now the festival is filling up with the NME crowd. CBA arguing this anymore. If soundgarden headline, they headline and we will see what sort of responce they get. I think that people are mixing up how big they are with how much that indervidual likes them.

I believe FR have said themselves the festival is not turning into an Indie festival... thus making this point kinnda eroneous. It just seems after literally one year of a slightly more indie line up everyone thinks the line up has changed for good.... this is not the case. What about the full Britpop lineup of Oasis, Stereophonics and maybe Suede was it?? in 1999?? Noone said it was an indie fest after then did they? Just seems really strange that 208 people said the festival had a great lineup etc.. and after a year people now say it's "indie". Strange.

But if we are talking of a band who are big, who have "legend" status, have release iconic album(s), Just reunited, and are a credible headliner... why are they not regarded as such?

people who still think it's 'Axl and Freinds' why dont you lock your self in your bedroom and listin to AFD still and live the dream! it's still a band end off!

just saying they be a good headliner!

Indeed.

Hopefully it would bring in the sort of people who aren't gonna put up with the "traditional" Sunday night "rowdiness".

Honestly though, I remember the first time I went in 03, the crowd was so much more varied, I'd love to see more old school metallers/punks/rockers mixed in with the indie kids and the "sex on fire" brigade.

Thing is, 2009 wasn't even ridiculously indie-based... just, the indie was spread out over more days, and if you look below Kaiser Chiefs and Kings of Leon, the sunday (leeds) was a fairly respectable 'heavy day', like Stereophonics day in 2000, with them above slipknot, rage, blink, etc.

On topic: headliners are seeming to be really elusive this year, kind of exciting, but can't help feeling we're going to end up disappointed by them. Arcade Fire, Guns 'n' Roses and Green Day would be ideal, but can understand Arcade Fire aren't really big enough to headline, but certainly don't deserve to be moved down from second place in 2007, especially if their new album is as good as any previous stuff.
